Trying to install on Dell OptiPlex 3060 Mini

  • I'm trying to install on a Dell OptiPlex 3060 Mini and having some issues. I've read here on the forum that the issue has something to do with the boot loader. After I do an install the boot loader does not recognized the Debian boot option (trying my best to explain what is going on).

This thread says that I need to fix the boot loader and I'm trying to follow along.

I was able to use SuperGrub2 to get into OMV (something I was pretty proud of myself to figure out). Now when I follow the steps

    1. Once OMV is booted, run dpkg-reconfigure grub-efi-amd64 as root and choose "Yes" when prompted with

I do not get the Yes prompt but told that grub-efi-amd64 is not installed. OK, we are now WAY outside of my wheel house on getting this to work. I'd like to say I'm pretty handy, but I'm now over my skis. What should I do now? I tried to figure this one out on my own, but now I'm going to need the big guns to help me out HAHAHAHA!

  • I've not been able to figure this out but I wanted to at least try to test. I was able to install Ubuntu Server without a problem. Again, this does not fix my problem but does prove the the system does work. Before trying to install OMV I had Proxmox installed which I also had done. I guess it has to do with how the boot loader gets setup? I'm not sure how to fix something like this.

Install Debian from a netinst .iso and then install OMV using the script.

Sounds like the boot loader was installed on the wrong disk. Did you try enabling legacy bios?

  • It has something to do with how Debian sets up the boot loader. From what I've been reading I need to figure out how to change this around. If I boot off of a USB and load SuperGrub it sees the Debian loader and I can load into the OMV system. So it's all there and installed on the drive, I just can't boot up into it. I can install Ubuntu just fine on the machine so I know everything is working ok.

  • The problem with legacy is there is no HD option. Legacy on this machine only offers things like USB, CD, and Disk but not HD. Disk is not a hard disk. But I'll check again.

If you switch to legacy, you may have to switch the hdd from acpi to ata if you are not seeing the drive available in the installation process.

  • Bizarre. First time I have ever seen that, but I'll add it to the list of why I hate Dell.

Well gonna throw out another option. Use an external device for boot such as a usb HDD/SSD or even a USB thumb drive (with the flash plugin installed to prolong it's life), and use the internal drive as additional storage.

Never helps trying to run a Windows focused desktop machine as a linux server.

I still don't know why Ubuntu works and Debian doesn't. Ubuntu is using grub packages (and many others) from Debian.

I agree that using a usb stick to boot from would be what I would do. Even if the usb stick only has grub and maybe /boot on it.

  • I ended up passing on this right now. I was able to install Ubuntu Server on this machine and will mess around with that until I grab a small machine that can take the OMV install. Possibly one of those Lenovo Mini machines? I don't have the space for another large machine and need more power than a Pi.
