Appropriate R-Pk version for 2*2TB HDD Raid1

  • *I know little about NAS storage and OMV, sorry😅*

I want to have a simple home NAS to back up photos and videos. I'm planning on running 2 2TB Nas drives in Raid 1. From what I can see, using a Raspberry pi is probably the simplest and cheapest way to accomplish this(?).

I find it difficult to research what version Pi I should use for this purpose. I may be able to get some older models at a great discount, as so I don't want to buy a 5 with 8GB Ram if that's overkill.

Any insight into this is much appreciated!:)

    Welcome to OMV!!!

Most users start with very basic requirements when starting with OMV. After some time they realize that OMV, thanks to the plugins, can do much more. So they start using dockers for applications like a self-hosted wiki, password manager, Nextcloud and much more.

Most docker images run only on 64bit systems. So as a minimum I would use a RPi that supports 64bit. I think that would be the RPi 4.

Please be aware that using of RAID is not suggested with USB connected drives. Many users lost their data in the past. Therefore the creation of RAID is not possible with USB connected drives in OMV.

Most likely you do not need RAID, as RAID is NOT backup. RAID is about availability and photos and videos most likely do not have a high need for availability. IF you think you really need RAID, then the RPi is not the right hardware.

5 Simple Reasons Why RAID Is Not a Backup
“Can I use RAID in place of backups?” I see this question posted throughout the web in one form or another. After learning how RAID facilitates redundancy,…

For installation of OMV on the RPi please follow this guide:

Please also have a look at the documents linked in my signature to get started with OMV.

    Have fun!!!

There are other alternatives besides a Raspberry.
