no, you can use a same or bigger destination, but after boot, you need to resize your destination to use all free space (gpart do the job)

Friend, if it involves counting sectors and consulting volume maps then I'll be going back to clean installing from scratch unfortunately, but thanks for your input. Gpart plugin's AMD and Intel too by the look of it (my system's Arm).
It also sounds as though it's not a workable approach when the destination's a smaller capacity volume (like it or not (I don't) that's my situation)
Look at clonezilla. If you plan on using a smaller destination device, investigate ICDS option. I would avoid a smaller device if you can.
Another option is clonezilla. It can clone to a smaller drive if you enable the "-icds" option. However it does require booting to a clonezilla boot disk or having it installed from the kernel plugin, which if done will increase the size of the clone, and may not be desirable when trying to shrink down.
The other option I could recommend is to use omv-regen. it will run all updates on the source system, and then save all the configurations. It can then be used on the destination system to restore the configurations to the updated system. Not a bootable backup, but will let you transfer the system configurations. There are omv-regen guides in the guide section of the forum.
I would avoid a smaller device if you can.
