Running OMV as LCX Container on Proxmox, Problems with Disk passthrough

  • Hi Everybody,

I tried a lot of things that did even work worse.

Right now I am able to see the disk within omv (passthrough via proxmox resources for the lxc contaier as /dev/sda

But when I try to generata a file system within omv I get an error after the process started (see below).

Whats wrong and how to fix that?

If relevant: What I want to do is to use omv for generating a network drive what can be used within other virtual machines on proxmox and with hardware-machines within the same network.

    Thanks a lot in advance!
    Sammy

OMV isn't supported in containers. Why not run OMV with the KVM plugin on the host instead of proxmox?

  • Well proxmox is my base system which seemed to be nice and easy to run different machines for different purposes.

Could I use a kvm VM (instead of lcx container) for omv?

Well proxmox is my base system which seemed to be nice and easy to run different machines for different purposes.

The KVM plugin does the same. I created it using my 10+ years of VMware and Proxmox experience. The plugin allows you to create VMs and LXC containers. I run it myself at home and it replaced my VMware and Proxmox clusters.

Could I use a kvm VM (instead of lcx container) for omv?

    Yes.

  • So you are running omv directly on bare metal + your kvm plugin on omv for other KVMs or LXC containers?

Sounds interesting but so far I dont want to make a totally new setup.

Are there settings you recommend for a VM on proxmox for OMV?
    Install Method "https://docs.openmediavault.org/en/latest/installation/via_iso.html" I guess?

Yes. on primary server, I am running 15+ VMs. Other servers, I am running VMs and LXC containers and Docker containers.

use virtual network and virtual storage adapters.

  • ryecoaaron I was always wondering what the KVM plugin does. Does the KVM plugin has the same functionality as Proxmox itself, and do you know some resources I can read more about.

    thanks
