E-mail Notifications Stopped Working

  • I've been using Hotmail/Outlook for my e-mail notifications in OMV for years, and they recently stopped working on my NAS. I'm fairly certain that it's because Microsoft has disabled basic authentication which means that even "app passwords" no longer work (yes, I tried a new app password). The log entry looks like this:

    postfix/smtp[571250]: 270E81C40798: to=<intentionallyremoved@hotmail.com>, orig_to=<root>, relay=smtp-mail.outlook.com[40.97.212.6]:587, delay=243829, delays=243818/0.1/11/0, dsn=4.7.139, status=deferred (SASL authentication failed; server smtp-mail.outlook.com[40.97.212.6] said: 535 5.7.139 Authentication unsuccessful, basic authentication is disabled.

I believe that Google has also disabled basic authentication for Gmail accounts. Is there any way to get the OMV notifications to work with OAuth? Is there some other solution other than using an e-mail provider with weak security?

    Thanks.

  • Hello friends!

Sorry for a possible childish question, but I can't solve it in any way... I have two OMV 7.4.17-2 servers with almost the same configuration and settings. The only difference is that one has the system installed on an SSD, and the other on an SD card. Where the system disk is SSD, mail works properly, and where the SD card seems to fall asleep over time. That is, after the configuration everything is ok for a while, notifications come, and then they stop. If I reboot this server, then when I reboot again, I immediately receive a bunch of notifications, for all the time when the server did not send them.

I will be very grateful to you for any help in solving this issue.

  • When you have this problem you should try sending a test message from the Notifications | Settings page.

After I configure the mail, test notifications work, but after a while they stop until I restart the server.

What is the output of this command when the notifications stop working?

    Code
    sudo systemctl status postfix

I can't understand this either. It seems like some service is sleeping on the server with the SDCard installed as the system disk.

Could this plugin - openmediavault-flashmemory 7.0.1 be causing this behavior?

That is an issue. Not sure what it means though. You might ecosia for it.

    Yes, sorry...

    How about

Funny you should mention the openmediavault-flashmemory plugin.

I have been using that plugin for years without any problems until the last six-eight months. At that time my postfix and rsyslog broke. Unistalling the plugin solves it; reinstalling it reliably breaks them. I have never been able to get it to work again and have basically given up on it.

I used to run OMV on a USB thumb drive so that plugin was important to me. Now I run OMV on a SSD so I don't absolutely need it.

ryecoaaron did some work on a new flashmemory plugin and I tested it, but it broke things the same way as the original one does.

  • Yes, this plugin is the only difference between systems where mail works properly and where it doesn't. That's why I thought about it...

I won't give it up yet, because the system works on SD.

Sorry for wasting your time, but for now I'll leave everything as it is... Maybe someday this plugin will be finalized and everything will work properly...
