Brand new 128GB SSD on USB not booting after 4 weeks OMV 7

    Does anybody have a clue what could happened to my 128GB SSD after just 4 weeks running OMV 7 via USB?

    My ASUS Mainboard regognizes the SSD but fails to boot. The SSD is connected to the internal USB because I need all 6 SATA ports for data drives.

    I can make a Backup of the SSD, connected to a Windows Client and just cloning it to another new 128GB SSD of the same type.


    Links and advice very welcom how to make the SSD bootable again and how to avoid this mess in the future.

    From one day to the other I couldn't wake up the NAS via WLAN and booting ended in opening the BIOS of my Asus H87I-PLUS.

    The SSD is correctly discovered by the BIOS but Boot ends in the BIOS with a back screen and showing the cursor in the upper left corner for some seconds before.

    If there is other information I can give you, please don't hesitate to ask which information you need and how I can provide it.

    I'm no LINUX-Pro but -Noob unfortunately.

    I'd like to avoid running into the same problem again.

    Unfortunately my Mainboard doesn't support booting from NVMe plugged in a PCIe adaptor.

    Is Grub not stable working on SSDs on USB or is it possible that I have some problem with my hardware?

    I have a few systems booting off usb sticks for years with no issues. This is not a grub issue.

    The large number of users who aren't having problems with grub on USB connected SSDs ought to convince you to look elsewhere.

    I've had very good luck with PNY USB 3.x sticks in the past.


    One thing I have observed many times in the past is that if it takes a very long time to write the OS image to a USB stick, that stick is a poor choice and shouldn't be used.

    Usually sandisk with higher r/w rates.

    I have direct experience with that exact drive in the 16GB size. I bought three of them and wound up throwing them away for the reason I stated above. Write speed to them started out good but within a few minutes dropped to a crawl and the device got very warm.

    With one exception where I'm using an SSD, I've been booting with USB drives for years. Get two decent quality matching / same sized thumbdrives drives (not generics) and be sure to install the -> flashmemory plugin. Then, when you get OMV config'ed the way you want it, -> clone the drive.

    No, SanDisk Fit is garbage. I use Samsung Fit Plus with 64 GB (2020...approx. 12 €). They are becoming increasingly rare. They are fast and I haven't had any failures yet. The two SanDisk Fits, which are still whole here and lying around here, I only use for unimportant things.

    I find this to be amazing, bordering on startling. Maybe this had to have something to do with that particular model or, perhaps, a recent production run? Maybe the Fit was out sourced?.

    With the flashmemory plugin, I've used SanDisk USB2.0 and 3.0 models reliably, running for several years in fact, without incident. On the other hand, I suppose USB 2.0's and 3.0's would be considered to be older models. I've had PNY SD-cards fail in R-PI's, again older models, but not in time frames that I would consider to be excessively early.

    If anyone has had issues with other models of SanDisk 3.1 thumbdrives, (outside of the Fit model), please chime in. If SanDisk quality is dropping, it would be good to know.

    This is an example of where cloning or otherwise backing up your OS drive, using a method you can easily restore, is a very good idea. If by chance you find yourself with a failed boot drive, recovery would be free of computing drama.

    But unfortunately here we have a classical blind spot in the otherwise exemplary OMV-documentation.

    Exactly this is what I'm struggling with: How can I automatically backup my USB-Drive or SSD with the OMV-system to another NAS and how exactly is the restore process? All this for someone with 5 thumbs in every hand regarding LINUX.

    Automatic backup and an easily documented restore process are not two things that go together for linux noobs.
