Moving on

  • I know OMV isn't fit and forget but I've just left mine for a few years. I now get errors when checking for updates and plugins.

    Error message below

Obviously I have no idea what any of that means but id like to update to version 7 possibly.

What's the best way forward please??

    Many Thanks

    James

  • okay, Thanks. any idea what the error message means?

    Just too old now maybe??

Also, How do I keep my data on the HDD's,

Last time I had an issue I lost everything. I couldn't access the drives.

If I remove them to install V7 will they plug in after or do I need to upload elsewhere.

    I'm very green at this....lol

  • Currymunster - very impressive that you have just left omv running for a few years without updating :)

I'm assuming you have a simple setup with disks / file system and it should be fine to install omv7 new and then attach the disks and mount the file system. Just make sure you 'mount existing file system' (see pic below)

You should read (and follow) the omv7 installation guide - https://wiki.omv-extras.org/doku.php?id=omv7:new_user_guide

OMV 7 (latest) on N100 Minipc (16GB) and RPI5 (8GB). OS on SD card. System ext4 on SSD. Data BTRFS on HDDs

  • I think very simple,

Old PC being used as a NAS.

Excel and word files with pictures and music and films. PDF's as well

    Two disks.

    I will read your link shortly :) :) :)

  • So just check how the 2 disks are formatted (in the file system tab of the GUI). Hope they are ext4 (a native linux format) on both. One for the OMV install and the other with your data.

If this is the case, you can safely install omv new over the existing install disk with the data on the other. Just make sure you install omv on the right disk!

Just checked and yes , they are all Ext 4

So you are saying I can just install OMV7 over the existing and the Data will still be available.

I remember something like this before and it didn't work. I think due to the permissions??

  • Yes - if you have 2 disks with one data and the other omv install.

To be safe/sure, you can disconnect the data disk (e.g. remove the sata cable or power if it is an internal disk or unplug if USB).

Then do a complete new install of OMV7. Get it installed and updated etc.

Then shutdown. Connect the data disk and reboot. Then you should be able to 'mount existing file system' in the GUI to mount the data disk.

Then all that is left to do is recreate the shared folders and enable smb/cifs service to be able to access the data over the network.

  • ... one last thing. You will need to create a user in the omv gui and give the user access to the shared folder(s).

I have 2 disks plus another for the OMV OS so thats 3 in total.

I don't understand your last post. I already have two users set up.

Do I need to do another one??

  • When you re-install OMV you will have 0 users. You need to recreate them in OMV. You are starting with a completely new install.

If you have 2 data disks. Just do what I said for both disks.

How is your data organised on the two disks? A set of shared folder on each?

  • Looks like you might have a bit more complicated setup. I think you have 2 disks setup in a RAID config. Is this correct?

The good news is that you have very little data so you can easily transfer everything to a USB disk/ssd.

If I were you, I would just spend $100 on a 500gb ssd. Use this for data - do not use RAID. Then use your old disks for backup.

The server started out being a way for my wife and I to access my plastering business paperwork from our own computers.

It was a nightmare always being on one PC and the server just made it all easier.

I vaguely remember when I first set it up it was RAID but I lost one disk and ended up losing data on the others. so I changed it to not be raid from advice on here. Made one disk backup to copy data to but that one is now not working.

I'm pretty sure the setup is not raid now but once was. I agree it would be a good idea to just copy the data.

I have another PC and thought of making that a new server and then just coping the data from one server to the other.

I hope in the future to dip my toe into plex as our new Samsung TV does not just connect to the server like our last Hisense did.

One of my forum post from 2018 when I was first setting it up

Raid Mirror - RAID - openmediavault

  • Thanks for the info.

Looking at the disk usage from your pictures, it looks like your data is on the disk (raid i think) /dev/md0 and the disk is full. If one disk in the raid has failed, you have no redundancy and is totally pointless. I also think your 'backup' might not be working.

Your other working file system /dev/sda1 has omv installed.

I think the first thing you need to do is get a copy of all the data on the /dev/md0 to another disk. I would do this straight away. I don't think you have a reliable backup of your data right now.

Honestly, just get / buy a USB SSD 500gb. That is all you need. You need to get your data safe before doing anything else.
