Root Password not set after password change?

  • Hi all,

First off, thank you to everyone involved in this community. Im new with linux, and all the resources I've seen so far have been incredibly helpful.

I just finished building a local NAS on a RP5, and have some issues with logging in as a root user. Reading through the OMV New User Guide, I see that under "OMV-Extras" it mentions the following:

"Login as root, using the password installed during the installation"

Ive tried logging in through SSH, and through the RP5 as a root user, with the password I set after initial installation, but the CLI always responds with Login Incorrect. If I use the same password, but my own username, I'm able to log in successfully.

Im not having any issues at the moment that require me to log in as root, but I did have issues (before wiping and resetting the OS) with getting into the omv-firstaid, configure network interface. I accidently set the wrong static IP, and was hoping to adjust it from first aid.

Am I missing something in regard to the root password? I'm as new as someone could be when it comes to Linux, but I'm a quick learner, and always looking for advice!

  • I think that logging in as the root user via SSH is disabled by default. Using the WebUI look in Services | SSH and see if "Permit root login" is enabled.

  • Its true that using root is 'discouraged' on rpi during install but there is a root account.

I have tried to be good and not enable root on my pis but I can't help it. :)

You just need to use sudo with a standard user account at the cli to reset the root password - sudo passwd root

Correct that you also need to allow root login for ssh...
