User home directory

  • Greetings,

I am in a fresh install of OMV7.

Got a nice large disk on a case connected to the raspberry pi 4b

    INFO

    System Information

    Version: 7.4.15-2 (Sandworm)

Processor: Raspberry Pi 4 Model B Rev 1.2

    Kernel: Linux 6.6.62+rpt-rpi-v8

    GOAL:

I want to create a storage and backup place for my wife and kids.

Rather than create a shared folder as I often did in the past (previous version of OMV), I like to make use of the Home Direcotries in OMV7. (basically also shared folders but I guess less steps and more tied to a created user)

    Actual configuration:

    - under User Management|Settings

I checked Enabled and created a Location pointing to my external Disk called homes

    - Created a user1.

    Shell: /usr/bin/bash

    Group: users

    - under: Storage | Shared Folders

I can see the shared folder called homes that was automatically created (homes/) on the correct drive.

    - under: Services|SMB/CIFS|Settings is Enabled

in section Home directories, Checked Enabled, Browseable and Inherit Permission

    ISSUE

I dont get to see the user folder under the homes folder when browsing the SMB share.

I do see 2 shares: homes and nobody (not sure why nobody is among the shares). See snapshot:

inside homes there are no user folders. I also tried to first login as the user (in omv7) and check if the folder was created but was not.

    Questions:

    1. What exactly does enabling "User home directory" and giving its location?
    2. Are home directories automatically created under the above configuration? If not, can you please explain me how to do that?
    3. What would be the advantage/benefit to use home directory Vs create and share folders with rights per user?

    Thank you.

I hope there are simple and easy answers to my questions.

    Appreciate any help.
