OMV address is 127.0.0.1 ... ?

  • Running OMV on a Debian server box.

On my OMV dashboard, the Hostname is listed as "localhost", even though I have a DNS entry set up on my router.

When I open Webmin on my server, it shows the System hostname as "omv (127.0.0.1)".

Is there a simple way to fix this so that OMV and Webmin show the correct name and address?

I looked at /etc/hosts, but there's a note that it's under the control of OMV and that I shouldn't edit it.

    Thanks !

    My config:

    Debian Linux 12.8 + Linux 6.1.0-28-amd64 + 7.4.17-1 (Sandworm)

  • Have you configured a network interface in OMV?

Google is your friend and Bob's your uncle!

A backup strategy is worthless unless you have a verified to work by testing restore strategy.

    OMV AMD64 7.x on headless Chenbro NR12000 1U Intel Xeon CPU E3-1230 V2 @ 3.30GHz 32GB ECC RAM.

  • I originally set up Network > General with the hostname and lan as the domain, but now I notice some fine print that I should use internal.

    Changed that. Saved.

After rebooting, OMV lists omv.internal as the Hostname, while Webmin still reports omv (127.0.0.1).

OMV is connected to my LAN as eno1. IPv4 is configured with the correct IP.

    What should I try next?

  • Where exactly in the UI is this shown? A screenshot might help.

Sorry, I thought it was clear. It's right on the Webmin dashboard. First thing in the main table of info on that page.

I'm asking here because the advice I found on Webmin is to edit the /etc/hosts file, but evidently OMV takes control of that and any edits there will be lost.

So, it seems I have to go through OMV to fix this.

What do you think is missing from the file?

I am no expert on this, so I searched the Net... and found this:

Debian 10 and Ubuntu 20.04.1 Different System hostname showing
Hello, I have few questions, let me begin with providing you with my server configurations. One of my VPS using Debian 10 with Virtualmin and on my control…
    forum.virtualmin.com

The fix is to change this entry in /etc/hosts :

    127.0.1.1       omv.internal omv

...to my omv server ip (10.0.1.20). But there is a comment in the file, stating that OMV generates /etc/hosts and no changes I make will be saved.

So, I can't do both — and thus my query for guidance. Does this make sense?

    Thanks

Are you using DHCP or a static UP address? If DHCP, the hostname is dynamically attached to the IP address received by the DHCP server. Note, the file is not updated, it it processed at runtime.

If you have configured a static address, the address should be added to /etc/hosts by the OMV deployment scripts.
