Where to host OMV

  • I have a new NAS setup (Ryzen 5600, 16gb ddr4, arc a380, 512gb nvme SSD, 3x 4TB HDD raid 5)

    I'm new to OMV.

    I want to add some kind of ssd cache, so I can have faster write access to the NAS, and that it will slowly feed that into the HDDs. The 512GB SSD is currently the boot drive, and only has 10GB or so used.

    Currently I don't use many VMs or containers, but likely will host some in the future. Jellyfin, handbrake is already used. Remote git clients and file storage will also be used.

    I thought of a few options to do this:

    1. Get a new small cheap NVMe SSD for OMV and use the 512GB for SSD cache

    2. Partition the current SSD with a 128GB OMV partition and use the rest for cache

    3. Buy a new USB drive and run OMV from that

    4. Accept that the world isn't perfect and that 8TB of storage in RAID 5 already is plenty for what I currently need and upgrade in the future when I really need it.

    if you only have gigabit networking, there is no need for cache. If you have faster networking, then I would probably go with option 3.

    plugins :: omvextrasorg 7.0.2 | kvm 7.1.2 | compose 7.4.5 | cputemp 7.0.2 | mergerfs 7.0.5 | scripts 7.1

    It's running on a 2,5gb switch for local devices.

    And thanks for the input. I'm just afraid that the endurance of the usb isn't enough. Not sure if that's a fair concern when using use plugin for usb installations tho

    Several of us run OMV from an USB thumb drive for years using the flashmemory plugin.

    With the USB thumb stick the backup is also very straight forward. So you can always have an appropriate backup.

  • Thanks to the both of you! Appreciate it.

    I'll likely move to flash then. For some reason making backups of the OMV installation never crossed my mind (ironic for a NAS...)

    We even backup the backup system at work : )
