Hi all,
I'm looking to set up a 1- or 2-disk NAS at home and I'd like the device to take up as little space as possible. I'd have no problem building a custom amd64 box but it's difficult to find a compact 2-bay enclosure. I'd much rather something along the lines of the QNAP TS-253e or Synology DiskStation DS723+ which are nice and compact but still quite featureful.
However, having an amd64 CPU is unfortunately no guarantee that the BIOS/UEFI isn't locked down and one can install one's own bare-metal operating system. Does anyone have experience installing an OS on these kinds of proprietary amd64 NAS machines? Is it possible? Is it likely I can just stick in an OS installation USB stick, press whatever keys during boot and select the USB stick from a boot menu?
Thanks,
rah
