Offline Installation / Installing without Internet

  • Hello,

It seems that I will need support from people that are smarter than I am and my question is is't possible to install OMV 7.x completely as offline installation - I mean downloading the ISO file from internet, creating a USB drive and installing from there?

I installed OMV 7.x already once last year and during installation process it downloaded the installation files from the internet which went well but my ISP provider changed couple of weeks ago and now for some reason my NAS can't access to the internet and last time it automatically recognized my ISP provider DHCP and now it doesn't do that. I'm planning to contact my ISP provider and ask can they give such information to me for manual configuration since automatic config fails.

I also thought that since my NAS computer is not connected to the Internet and only a few Macs that are on my internal network need to access it can I do the whole installation - OMV 7.x (latest version) and OMV-Extras - completely offline

I found this very old thread about offline installation
Newbie query; Can I install OMV without internet?

Also when taking a closer look at OMV-Extras oflline installation it says that older versions were possible to install offline but since OMV version 6.x need to use installation method mentioned here
    OMV-Extras.org Plugin

Any suggestions what I am doing wrong and/or how to solve this issue are highly appreciated

Thanks for you help in advance

  • I don't think so because it downloads updates from the internet although it should be possible to bypass downloading updates from the internet.

And what about the ISP not giving you a router?,

or check what gateway you have assigned dns and ip on the working one, and enter the information manually bypassing dhcp

  • Thanks gekomod and Soma for your quick replies and yes my ISP provided me a router - even though I said that I just purchased a new one with my own money last year - and I've tried with both of them and no luck. My Mac Mini which is my daily driver is connected using my own router and it worked fine from the beginning but for some reason I'm struggling with OMV installation

When I installed it first time last year everything went without any problems and for some reason now that my ISP has changed it doesn't get automatically DHCP information when auto config starts

  • my ISP provided me a router

Which router do you have? ISP? Country?

Never saw a ISP router not able to give addresses to the home network devices.

Even if the ISP given network is behind CGNat

I live in Finland and my ISP is Elisa https://elisa.fi/

I have this router TP-Link M4 and I have mobile phone app to control it
    (here's the link https://www.tp-link.com/fi/home-networking/deco/deco-m4/)

Then this one was what my ISP delivered to me Zyxel EX5601-T0

And how is it connected to your home? With a Fiber connection, Satelite, coaxial cable, copper wire?

I mean, the ISP provides the router and the physical connection, right?

Using the ISP router, you will have WiFi available and the Zyxel has 4 LAN RJ45 ports that will give Internet acces to all connected devices by having a DHCP server on it. Everywhere in the world I've been, it's how things are everywhere.

If DHCP is not working on it, you need to sort it with the ISP.

If you add your own router, you need to make sure that it has the DHCP server active on it.

Honestly, it makes no sense why or how you don't have Internet on all devices connected.

  • well check the settings in tplink and zyxel, you may have a problem there, and try to set up internet without dhcp on the server
