Shared Folders -> SMB - Remap seamlessly?

  • So. I have a network share named 'OverFlow' which is pointed at a pool which is full. My idea is to offload the entire contents, deleted the share and all references. Then recreate the same exact share, pointing at the new location larger pool and reload the entire contents.

I want to do this, because my Emby Server points at this network location and I don't want to edit all these references :(

Can I do this without breaking it? If 'OverFlow' exists now, and I delete it an all references, can I then create 'OverFlow' again? Or will there be a conflict?

    Thanks.

Why not just edit the sharedfolder and change the Filesystem it is pointing to?

Heh, is it as easy as that?

I made the mistake of creating a shared folder named 'Swap', and moving the data over. Any attempts to point point the 'OverFlow' shared folder at this Filesystem didn't work because the relative path where the data was defaulted to 'Swap'.

So, I assumed I needed to delete all and recreate? Maybe that is not the case. I cannot create another 'OverFlow', but I did just create 'Temp' with a relative path of 'OverFlow'... would this work?

You can change the filesystem and the relative path when editing a sharedfolder.

When you delete a shared folder and recreate it, it has a different uuid in the database. So, every service using the old shared folder will have to be updated to point to the new shared folder. That is why i suggested editing since this does not change the uuid and services don't need to be updated.

Got it, will attempt and report back on success. Thank you! :)

  • Ok, so my method was to migrate the data, and turn off the 'OverFlow' share. Create a new 'OverFlow' shared folder/relative path on the new drive. Then point the SharedFolder at the new filesystem on the new drive, and migrate data back.

All worked out, and was transparent to Emby/Sonarr/Radarr.

    Thanks for the suggestion!
