Clone Data SSD without breaking Shared Folder links

  • Question about Cloning an SSD.

setup - Pi4, running OMV6. OS on SD card (SD OS image created, duplicated and stored, so no issues with the SD card ).

All data and shared folders on a USB3 500Gb SSD. 280Gb used.

Have docker with 4 containers : Duplicati, nginx, portainer, cloud commander.

I assume ( ? ) that these exist on the OS SD card, and reference data on the SSD.

I need to create a Backup / Copy / Clone of the SSD.

If the active SSD fails, I need to be able to plug in the backup SSD, and have all the data and shares working with no additional setup to be done.

Does the OS link the Shared Folders to the SSD's drive ID / drive name / USB port, or something else ?

How can I do this without breaking the OS file shares, and having to recreate all the folder shares when the backup drive is used ?

Best options / apps / software to make the clone ?

Backup SSD ( also 500Gb ) may not be 100% identical in size to the existing SSD ( if it matters ).

  • ok. it looks like Clonezilla may be the tool I need ?

it appears it will Clone the SSD to another SSD,

even if the target space is smaller than the source space ( as long as there's enough space on the target for the amount of data ),

and it will also clone the UUID of the SSD ?

Since my OS is on an SD card, can I Putty in to the Pi and run Clonezilla, or do I need to create a Clonezilla Boot SD card and SSH to that ?

Pis don't run Live clonezilla ISOs.

You will need to do it on a proper PC.

    Power down the Pi.

Clone/image the ssd on the other PC.

Flash the image to the new ssd

Put the ssd back on the Pi

    Power up

    Profit

  • Hi Sona.

    Thank You for your input.

So are you saying I should power down the Pi, move the old SSD to a USB3 port on my Windows 10 PC, install Clonezilla on the PC, plug in the New SSD ( also USB ) and Clone from SSD1 to SSD2 ?

Can Clonezilla do it as a direct clone from SSD1 to SSD2 ? I don't have enough space on my PC drive to save 280Gb from the source SSD.

This would be best case scenario for me, as I do not want to disturb anything on the Pi, OMV, SMB Shares, Containers, etc.

    Yes.

You don't need Clonezilla. You can use any other app that is able to clone a drive.

Macrium Reflect, Acronis True image, Paragon Hard Disk Manager, among so many other's, for eg

They all should be able to do it but I advise against it.

It is much better to do an image of the old disk and clone the image back to the new disk. Less prone to error, especially on USB connection.

It will also be faster to do it and to verify the image (if the app used has that option)

The ssd2 will be a mirror of the old ssd1 so, OMV won't know the difference.

Many Thanks again for the advice and guidance.

As the Clonezilla is a free option :

I downloaded the Clonezilla iso on my PC, used Rufus to write it to a USB flashdrive, and then restarted PC.
Booted from the USB drive, got the Clonezilla screen, and all the options seem to be there.

New SSD is on the way, so tomorrow I can clone the SSD device to device, and then see if the new SSD works on the Pi and if OMV accepts it as the drive ( without any changes required ).
