Panic or segfault in Samba

  • Hello

My NAS has been throwing out lots of errors since yesterday. When I copy files from Windows to it, Windows would say that an unexpected network error has occurred and then my email gets spammed with errors as in the subject.

The FS was 87% so I cleaned it up, I upgraded everything (I'm on 7.6.0-1 now, the one in the signature is another NAS) but it's still happening.

What kind of info would you require to help me understanding what's going on?

    Thanks!

    ReadyNas Pro6 - intel 6600 - 8GB RAM - 3 x 4TB WD RED + 2 x 6TB WD RED

    Plugin: openmediavault-flashmemory

  • Any advice on this please? My NAS is half-usable: I can read but cannot write on it without that error showing up.

Happy to provide more details of course.

    ReadyNas Pro6 - intel 6600 - 8GB RAM - 3 x 4TB WD RED + 2 x 6TB WD RED

  • Thanks. It feels like a daunting task - like getting in touch with Microsoft for a BSOD!

I'm trying anyways - meanwhile, I thought I'd might want to reinstall SAMBA. I was about to try apt-get purge samba but before hitting Y I noticed this

    Code
The following packages will be REMOVED:
      openmediavault* openmediavault-cputemp* openmediavault-flashmemory* openmediavault-md* openmediavault-omvextrasorg* samba*
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 6 to remove and 21 not upgraded.

So a more appropriate question for this forum might be: how do I reinstall SAMBA without removing OMV?

Another one: from the logs I see I'm running samba smbd version 4.17.12-Debian - but it seems to be an EOL version so it's unlikely I'm getting any support from either the Samba or the Debian team. Am I missing something?

    Thanks

On the Debian forum they are suggesting it might be a bug which was fixed in 2:4.19.6+dfsg-1

    Samba: PANIC: assert failed at ../../source3/smbd/fd_handle.c(40): (fh->fd == -1) || (fh->fd == AT_FDCWD) - Debian User Forums

I'm not a Linux expert so... can I go ahead and update the package or is that version already installed but showing a different version?

    Thanks.

  • Any input on this please? As the samba package is displaying an unsupported version, I cannot receive any help elsewhere.

    Reinstalling Samba did not help.

  • Upgrading to the latest Samba version has resolved the issue.

I appreciate OMV is a free product but allow me to say I am a bit disappointed to have been told "ask Samba" when the package installed is clearly tagged as "unsupported".

Then you have to ask the Debian samba package maintainers. OMV is consuming the Debian packages, but is not responsible for them and can not maintain them.

  • Do not look at the Debian package version number. The packaging team is backporting worthwhile patches and fixes from the latest version.

To reinstall use apt-get install --reinstall samba

    Hi all

I've the same error (Panic or segfault in Samba) if I try to delete files with my android phone (FX File Commander) on my OMV Nas. Creating files is no problem. I'm using the same account like my windows pc which has no problems.

I'd try to execute apt-get install --reinstall samba, but the same version was installed (Entpacken von samba (2:4.17.12+dfsg-0+deb12u1) über (2:4.17.12+dfsg-0+deb12u1) ...)

Is there another way to update Samba on OMV 7.7.4-1?

    Thanks in advance

  • Hi

I would try a clean install of OMV on a definitely working boot media. I don´t know what type of hardware you are using ...

I never had any panic or segfaults with Samba, with my old Atom System.... I guess, there may be something wrong with your

installation. If this is not solving your problem, you can ask 'ryecoaaron' or 'votdev' or other professionals, how to enable backports for Samba.

  • Hi
Thanks for first information. Sorry for missing system information, I added them in my signature :)
Most important to say is, that I'm using mergerFS over three HDDs.

    Today I made another test

    - I created a samba share for a single HDD and tried to create/delete a file on this share with my android - Working without problems

    - Tried again with the mergerFS sambashare - create/delete a file - Panic/Segfault in samba

Is there a possibility to active debug logging for both services?

  • Hi

I can´t say anything to mergerFS... Hopefully ryecoaaron has an idea what can help you with your problem!

    He is using mergerFS, too.

  • By the way...

If Windows is working, the problem is the FX File commander... But you can try another kernel (6.11. Proxmox or the stable Debian 6.1.133-1).. Or you try to change the filesystem... Or you try to install a backported samba, but i don't know how to configure a samba bpo...

  • I'm having problems too... I configure everything but I can't load data, it always crashes... I don't know what to think anymore, I'm attaching a screenshot of what's happening to me on the Windows 11 side

  • Hi

Do you set SMB3 as minimal protocol?

    That's what i set...

  • That's tough...

Because i can't confirm a general problem with Samba on OMV 7...

But i'm speaking only for my old hardware..
