Undecided about synology vs openmediavault - Help

  • Hi, I'm new here and I need some advice/help, I'm going to tell you about my situation and a little to get into context, I have a proxmox server on which I run virtual machines and LXC's, I have several nvme and a 10tb wd red plus HDD, I have a VM with OMV installed and I have passed the HDD individually to OMV and there I have created a samba folder where I store all the movies and series for my jellyfin media server, but I've been thinking about buying a NAS for a while because I want to have a dedicated low-power NAS separate from the proxmox since I see it safer and if one day I screw up on proxmox or format it I don't want to lose anything from the NAS, so yesterday I ordered a synology ds423+ on amazon which is reduced to €480 and I'm also thinking of buying x4 12tb HDD to do SHR on synology, it's my first time using synology and I've found it quite interesting because its ease since I don't want headaches, the synology will arrive at my house within 1 week but before I discovered this mini PC: https://www.amazon.es/dp/B0D5HJVGGQ and I have seen it perfect for what I want since it is more powerful than the synology and it looks great, it also has linux and OMV installed by default, my question is: should I return the synology and buy this one? I don't know what to do since I want to do a raid 5 or shr on synology and there it is very easy to do, on OMV I have never done a raid and I want something simple that is easy to configure and does not give me headaches, my intention in the NAS is mainly to use it for storage for movies and series for the jellyfin server that is inside an LXC in proxmox and the idea would be to create a samba folder on the NAS and mount it on the LXC of proxmox which is exactly what I do now with OMV but having it in the VM, what do I do? I'm super lost, is it easy to configure raid 5 in OMV?

Sorry for the long text, I still have things to comment, the bad thing about the synology is its poor hardware and its 2 ethernet are only 1Gbit and my network is 2.5Gbit, I have also bought a ugreen usb to ethernet 2.5Gbit adapter for the synology, on the other hand that my pc that I mentioned from amazon has 2 2.5Gbit ethernet ports! In addition to more ram and a more powerful cpu, I also have to say that what I like about the synology is that apart from the samba folders that I want to create, it has a graphical interface to browse files as if it were a google drive or mega, but OMV I think does not have something like that.

PD: When someone is here, don't hesitate to answer me. Thank you very much for reading me. I'm super undecided ❤️

  • It's a pity you didn't ask for opinions before making the Amazon purchase. Perhaps the Synology NAS can be returned if you change your mind.

I would be useful to know the specs of your Proxmox server. What cpu and how much ram does it have? If the only thing the OMV VM does is to create a share on a single HDD then there better ways to do that within proxmox. See here for a description of various methods:

My favoured approach is to use a bind mount to a LXC container running a SAMBA server. The are several vids that demo a "turnkey file sever" on proxmox, or another popular method is to use cockpit with in a LXC container as shown for example here:

What you do need is external backups of your data and proxmox containers and vms and a machine to hold them. Whether that's a commercial NAS or self built is up to you.

  • I bought that 4bay NAS 2 weeks ago. Mine is the N100 variant and branded Rouafwit (from Amazon Germany). I'm running a few docker containers (like Nextcloud, AdGuard home, Stirling pdf, Immich even with hardware acceleration) and a few shares and I'm very happy with it.

It even came with Windows pre-installed but the OMV installer took care to remove it 😂.

I think the Synology is a great product but you mainly pay for the software. So it depends on how much value this gives to you. If you only need a simple but performant SMB server maybe the other option is better. OMV also has FileBrowser but - as you know - doesn't offer the desktop like experience (which I personally don't miss on a server at all).

Oh really? Is that the argument?

Sorry, I don't understand your question. My argument is that OMV does not have a desktop-style GUI like Synology has and that I still prefer the OMV GUI. And I mentioned Filebrowser because OP asked for it.

  • if you dont herit from now search on google xpenology if you want syno dsm on diy hardware.

on short my version regarding omv versus syno:

    - syno if you want plug and play

    - omv if you want freedom from cli

    - syno have built'in file manager (in omv have to use MC or docker variants)

    - in omv you can mount and share ntfs internal drives ... in syno you can only mount on cli ... but cant be shared or visible in file manager

    - omv has true hibernation of hdd or raids .... in syno you hardly have hibernation

    - syno if you want phones applications (dsfile, ds...etc)

but it depends on everyone's taste what they want
