I've built servers to use ZFS more than a couple times and I'm familiar with technical writing. Along those lines, in this venue, I use a "walk through" format written with accompanying screen captures, that will come from a ZFS build, as configured on a VM server.
In essence, other than user name choices (like the poll name or filesystem names), the document will:
(1) Describe an overview of ZFS
(2) Describe the prerequisites needed.
(3) Walk through pre-configuring OMV for ease of setting up ZFS. (This will get into kernel issues.)
(4) What a "vdev" is, setting up a pool, establishing certain pool properties, and creating ZFS filesystems.
(5) Talk about some of the basic maintenance requirements.
The above will be done in a way that teaches concepts to users, like how ZFS can be set up to maintain data integrity and how that works.(Then)
(6) I'll point to a document already written that covers setting up automated, self rotating and purging snapshots. (Which also covers some aspects of data restorations from snapshots.) I wrote this doc some years ago. -> zfs_auto_snapshot.
