System becomes unresponsive after performing updates

  • Hi,

I'm running OMV 7 (7.4.16-1) on an Odroid HC4 and am attempting to perform updates.

I've tried twice: once through CLI using omv-upgrade and the second time through the Web GUI. Both tries have resulted in the same outcome.

Basically after performing the updates, I see a banner pop up in the GUI asking me to "Apply Changes". When I click this, it attempts to do this for some time before the system becomes completely unresponsive - i.e. cannot access the Web GUI or SSH into the device. The first time I reverted to a backup I made before attempting to update and tried again through the Web GUI.

I expanded the details of the changes it wishes to apply on the second try and noticed that it listed these three:

    1. apt
    2. samba
    3. cannot remember exactly what it was.... but think it was systemd-networkd

Thankfully I have a backup that I can revert to from before the attempted update. But is someone able to help me update properly and get past this?
    Thanks :)

I would connect a keyboard and monitor and run omv-upgrade again. After, run sudo omv-salt deploy run apt samba systemd-networkd

    omv 7.7.5-1 sandworm | 64 bit | 6.11 proxmox kernel

    plugins :: omvextrasorg 7.0.2 | kvm 7.1.2 | compose 7.4.5 | cputemp 7.0.2 | mergerfs 7.0.5 | scripts 7.1

  • I would connect a keyboard and monitor and run omv-upgrade again. After, run sudo omv-salt deploy run apt samba systemd-networkd

OK. I connected a keyboard and monitor and ran omv-upgrade again, followed by the omv-salt command.

The omv-salt command reported that it successfully ran 39 actions, of which 17 were changed. 0 failed.

However, as before, I can no longer access the Web interface and I can't connect via SSH.

But obviously I can continue to interact through the monitor and keyboard that I connected.
Any thoughts or advice on what to do/try next?

Did you try connecting via ssh or web using the ip address listed in the output of ip a?

You could also try: sudo omv-salt deploy run ssh nginx phpfpm

Great suggestion, and I think this might highlight the issue! So I have been using a static IP reservation in my router for my OdroidHC4 - 192.168.1.4.

The output of ip a doesn't seem to give any useful IP addresses and it certainly doesn't list 192.168.1.4... see attached image. Has this been caused by the systemd-networkd update?

What is the output of: sudo cat /etc/netplan/*

    omv 7.7.5-1 sandworm | 64 bit | 6.11 proxmox kernel

Yep, systemd renamed your network adapter from eth0 to end0. Run sudo omv-firstaid to fix it.

Probably not a problem. Post cat /etc/netplan/* again

  • Thanks very much for your help! Really appreciate it :)
I can access the Web UI using the IP address again, and also can SSH in

Seems odd that the network interface was renamed to end0 from eth0. Isn't eth0 the normal/standard?

The systemd update caused systemd to change the adapter's name to a predictable name. eth0 is the old standard.
