RAID persistance across OMV versions

  • Hello,

I've been running OMV 5 for a while and since it's always just worked I haven't kept up with newer versions. I'd like to try out an install of 7 but my main concern is keeping my RAID 6 array readable. It's a software RAID I created with OMV 5 and referenced by the system using dev-disk-by-label which to my understanding isn't done on newer versions of OMV. So my idea and where my question is:

Can I put a fresh install of OMV 7 on a new SSD and swap it into my current system in place of my OMV 5 SSD? Will it be able to read the RAID 6 array and mount it or is there a compatibility issue there? Any advice on specific steps to take would be appreciated, thanks.

On OMV7 you need to install the openmediavault-md plugin to manage your RAID.

You should be able to mount the filesystem on the RAID with OMV7. It will be mounted by UUID instead of label.

When creating shared folders, use the browse function to be sure you point to the correct directory. That way you avoid typos.

  • Good to know about that plugin, I don't remember needing it to set up the RAID on OMV5. This seems like a pretty good solution to try out OMV7 without destroying my original setup accidentally during an upgrade process so I think I'll give it a try. The RAID array itself is fairly large, do I need to anticipate a rebuild of the array or will the new install be able to mount it without having to do that?
