Recommendation: MobaXterm

  • Hi all,

I want to bring a tool to your attention, that I recently discovered -- ok, to be honest, I also got a recommendation from a good friend of mine.

Starting point is the following situation:

I was struggling since quite some time with the fact, that some key shortcuts were not working as expected when using Putty with my NAS.

First I thought, this is somehow connected to a misconfiguration of the termcap entries.

After some research I learned, that the true culprit is Putty.

(When I opened a ssh connection using OpenSSH from my windows machine (without involving Putty), I had no issues at all with with the key shortcuts.)

MobaXterm basically has all the functionality for all sorts of remote connections right built in into one place (telnet, rlogin, ssh of course, rsh, vnc, rdp, ftp and much more).

    The best thing is:

It comes with an X-server. That means, you can install X-applications on the NAS, start them and use them from your windows machine (you need to set the DISPLAY variable first).

I tested this with some basic programs like xterm or xeyes (i really like that one) und xload.

I also tested some more advance tools like DoubleCommander and even gparted.

They all worked for me. I even used gparted to do some modifications to my partitions (not just to test it, I had to do that anyway). It worked as expected.

Oh, and key shortcuts work also as expected with MobaXterm.

Here is the link to their site: https://mobaxterm.mobatek.net/

    It's free for private use.

By the way, I added this line to my .profile to automatically set the DISPLAY variable:

    Code
    export DISPLAY=$( echo $SSH_CLIENT | cut -d\ -f1 ):0.0

(just in case someone wants to know: I am not connected to that company in any way. I'm just expressing my own, personal view here)
