SMB/CIFS File Transfer Appears Slow

  • SMB file transfer rate appears slow on 1 gig network (local). 1.5 gig video file transfers at 112 MB/s. Is this normal? If so, do I have to upgrade to 2.5 gig network to get faster transfer speeds?

    Setup:

Workstation connected to same 1 Gig switch as OMV NAS with files

The attached pic shows that the network card is connected at 1 gig

OMV 6 NAS Server connected to same 1 gig switch as Workstation

The attach pic shows that the network card is connected at 1 gig

the transfer rate -- 112 MB/s. Its the same transfer rate for all large files on the server.

I isolated the two machines to and another switch and tested again with the same results: tp-link TL-Sg108 /w 8 ports

  • Your network is 1 Gb (Gigabit). Anywhere between 90MBps to 115MBps (MegaBytes) is normal for a gigabit network. Theoretical maximum is 125MBps without taking into account any hardware handshaking or other hardware related bottlenecks, flow control, or protocol overhead.

You are likely not differentiating between the upper case B and the lower case b for the bits to Bytes conversion.

There is a factor of 8 to convert bits to Bytes, and a factor of 1000 to convert Mega to Giga.

    1Gbps x 1000 = 1000Mbps

    1000Mbps / 8 = 125MBps

Subtracting your protocol can easily reduce the data rate by 5% to 10%, and other hardware bottlenecks can reduce it further.

A faster connection (ie, 2.5Gbps hardware) can likely get better speeds if your systems can keep up, but don't expect to see a full 2.5 times the speed. You would more likely get somewhere between 1.5 to 2 times the speed.
