OS drive replacement current RAID 6 pool

  • Hello There...

Currently I have a few drives running a RAID 6 file system, and a sperate drive for the OS. I am having issues/errors with the OS drive (SSD) and want to replace it with a new SSD. Unfortunately my Linux experience and knowledge level is very limited. I have searched and read some of the forum postings, but its left me with more questions then answers and feeling discombobulated. I was wondering if someone could give me a step by step of how to go about doing this the correct way.

    Thanks in advance.

  • Hello there.

Fortunately Linux is very good at those things. If you want to clone a still working SSD, you can look into dd. This "tool" can do exact copies of block-devices (drives). You can either do it by connecting the new SSD to your server and using a live-linux on a USB-pendrive to copy the drive or you connect the original SSD and the new one to a separate host running Linux and do it from there. Once you have a clone, just hook it up and configure BIOS/UEFI to boot from that. Everything else should work as expected.

If your SSD is already failing and you are unable to do a clone-copy, you may have still chances to recover something, but then I would just do a fresh install and configuration from scratch. Usually you can reuse your data-drives with no data loss. Of course it depends on your skills and understanding what you do.
