  • I am presuming this is a command that should be run at an ssh terminal prompt?

I did run it this way, but it did not do anything till I pressed ctrl+C a couple of times at which point it run a series of commands such as "Cleaning apt cache", "Removing apt lists", etc.

The update is no longer giving me any errors, but it is also not updating or showing any updates. Considering it has not been updated in over 6 months, I would expect there to be updates and none are listed.

I also tried sudo apt update and sudo apt full-upgrade which indicated there were no updates. Seems very strange.

I also tried under OMV-Extras -> Updates -> update, ovm-update, upgrade but no changes.

Wondering if I should should being upgrading my Openmediavault to the latest release? Is there a process to perform an inline upgrade of Openmediavault and retaining all of your settings/configuration without starting with a fresh reinstallation of the OS and Openmediavault?

  • There's no updates because your Debian and OMV versions are EOL a long time ago.

You can either try to upgrade to OMV6 and, after, to omv7

    OR

Start fresh with omv7 to be updated

Search the forum for "omv-release-upgrade" to read how to do it.

Only run that command if you understand what it will do and the issues that can happen

  • Thank you Soma,

I suspected this was the case.

I was hoping there would be an inline upgrade process but it would appear that since my Debian is outdated, I would need to start from scratch again.

Can you provide me with any information on the following:

    • I currently have a 2tb external drive as my data drive (shared information)
    • It is formated as Ext4

    • Can I create a new installation, attach this drive and have OMV pick up the data drive and see the data?
    • I am presuming I would need to recreate the SMB shares and assign the user(s) to these shares once again?

    ---- OR ---

    • I will need to copy the data to another drive
    • Rebuild my OMV
    • Attach the old drive
    • Format it over again
    • Create the SMB shares, assign the user(s)
    • Copy the data back to this newly formatted drive

Yes. You can do that. After installing OMV, go to the File Systems tab and mount the existing data drive.
