Suddenly system drive full

  • I have done a few things and suddenly my system drive is full. Problem is i don't know why and i cannot find the root cause.

    How could i possibly identify the cause of this trouble?

  • Hello there,

    two questions ... how big is your root partition? Do you use docker? If you don't know what I'm talking about, just execute this and report back with the output.

    Code
    # check all mounted filesystems
    df -h

    # check for docker and its disk-space usage if it's installed
    dpkg -l |grep docker && echo "--" && docker system df
  • Thanks Bermuda. I did this and a lot more.

    What happened afterwards is really strange and i cannot explain it really. I rebooted to GParted to at least give the system drive a bit more freespace before finding the root cause. After having done this and rebooting, the space usage was like before again. So suddenly the space usage was fixed again. I have no idea what the hell this was. MAybe a broken partition table?

    It said before the reboot 350 GB used and after Gparted and reboot 50 GB used.

    Weird

  • Hello again.

    OK, sounds strange, but glad to see your issue was resolved. Not long ago one of my data disks would not mount. Found out it was empty all of the sudden, no partition table not even the filesystem (after I restored the partition table). I was able to restore the data via raid, but I never had such thing happen ever before. I suspect the back-port kernel is doing some weird stuff.
