I have installed the minidlna utility and am able to access it both on my windows 11 device and my roku. I cannot figure out how to get the media files on my windows machine into the video folder of minidlna on my omv machine. Copy and paste doesn't work. I feel like I'm missing something obvious. thanks.

you need to copy media files on windows to your OMV folder and share this OMV folder on miniDLNA so files can be shared by miniDLNA.
that simmilar to SMB share, files must reside on OMV to share by SMB to windows.

I am a novice so can you give me a step by step instruction on how to do that? I tried to copy and paste but the paste option is grayed out. Do I need to use SMB or Secure Copy (SCP) to accomplish this task?

Have you tried mapping a network drive from your Windows machine to the OMV machine? This way, you can easily transfer media files between them.

i think the thread opener lacks information how he has to use file permissions and shares at all.
Only public shares will be free to "discover" from windows as long as the user "nobody" is available for file permissions.
The Links are fine, but does he/she come along with them, understanding the basics?

SMB or SCP are just protocols that can be used to access the shares.
But first hand, you need the proper file permissions on the folder you want to be shared, anyway!File Systems like "NTFS" or "ext4" offer a so called user management that divides share holders of the files.
Means, you have to concern who is privileged to use your shared folders, anyway through "file permissions" set up!
