Network not working

  • I had omv running for months until last night the network stopped working. There no lan lights. I tried omv-firstaid command it's saying command not found. Tried rebooting and nothing but it show ata10 errors on boot . Spent an hour trying to fix it by using various guides online and nothing

Note that a flashing interface "light" is a receive function.

Have you checked the switch or router? (Switch the cable to another port.)
What kind of boot drive are you using? (Spinning drive, SSD, thumbdrive, etc.)
What hardware platform are you using? amd64, single board computer (SBC)? etc.
Have you considered that you might have an actual hardware problem?

Realize that you haven't provided enough to even take a guess.

We do not know if these are related, but could be. Reasons for ata errors could be

    • faulty or loose SATA cables
    • Power supply instability
    • Drive firmware bugs
    • Failing drive hardware

    You should check these.

  • I had one drive in a raid 1 fail but never removed it and the server was fine. My server.

    My specs

    MSI b450m pro vdh max

Patriot viper Black 8gb ram 3000mhz

    Ryzen 5 3400g

Ziyituod. Pcie 4 port raid card

    ssd pny 120gb boot drive

    I also have 2x 500gb sshd

Can't remember the rest of the drive sizes.

I removed all the drives and ata error is gone but still no network connection

  • I managed to get the network working using dhclient command and few others I found but now I keep getting multiplayer error and a blank screen after it's goes through the boot process. I'm.thinking now I'll just have to spend a day and reinstall from scratch

  • omv depends on os's and os's depend on drivers and drivers depend on bios and bios depends on hardware.
if you get no lights at the active lan port then omv it is the wrong (most distant) place to look for Problems.
look at your bios or in os (driver) logs... i 'm shure, your hardware lan port is gone. maybe a thunderstrike nearby.

If something is corrupted, in the OS or other, a rebuild is the logical choice. If you rebuild your OS on a thumb-drive, note that cloning thumb-drives is easy. With a clone you'd have 100% OS backup, that can easily be restored and have you up and running in a matter of minutes -> cloning flash media. (You might take the time to read the -> Operating System Backup section for the rational.)

Even if you manage to paint yourself into a corner by misconfiguration, or if something goes south with an update, being able to "punt" back to a known working boot drive could save a lot of time and aggravation.

With the above noted, OS backup won't save you from actual hardware failures. (But it would help in making that determination more quickly.) I would be concerned about the ata10 errors. Again, rebuilding to a thumb-drive might give you some insight into, whether on not, your boot drive is failing.

  • you can boot via pxe to see lan lights, there is no need to reinstall os'es for hardwarediagnostics. Or use a pendrive Linux and take a look at dmesg.

I checked the lan port with a live Ubuntu USB and it's working fine.

I'll just reinstall the os and start from scratch

    Thanks for the advice
