Extreme lifetime writes to SSD (SMART +1 million GiB written)

  • I'm fairly new to OMV and been running my install for about 6 months now on a repurposed Chromebox. I recently noticed my boot drive (16gb mSATA) showing "Bad" in the SMART menu with an extreme amount of lifetime writes to the boot drive, over a million GBs written (241 Lifetime_Writes_GiB -O--C- 100 100 000 - 1022246). I've been using flashmemory plugin since install because I knew the SSD was old and I wanted to extend its life, but it did not have anywhere close to this many writes when I originally checked it. Could this be an error in the SMART data somehow? Has anyone experienced anything similar before with their boot drive? What should I be looking to correct here?

That is a smart error. There no way you wrote an exabyte to a 16gb msata disk. The write speed is too slow to write that much in decades.

Hard to say if it is failing though. If the system is important, I would replace it. Otherwise, use omv-regen to create a backup. Just about any other backup method will clone bad sectors and/or corrupt files.

  • Got it. Thanks for the sanity check. Nothing super important is on the system. I'll make a back-up and then just wait and see how long this drive will actually last. Thanks!
