Victorian 150 year old NAS build

  • Build of a N100 based NAS using an Asrock motherboard. Novelty of using a Victorian era coal box as a case instead of buying a readymade box.

Using OMV to provide RAID on x2 320GB 3.5" HDD. Intention is to replace these with >2TB drives.

There are 8 SATA ports available, 2 on the motherboard and +6 via a PCIe expansion card. There is space in the box for 4 more 3.5" HDD

Power is sourced from a small ATX PSU that can provide 220W, and by wiring up a PCB for power breakout it means the Asrock board is not stressed by powering the drives.

Also have VPN and docker plugins running.

A small 40mm fan is tied onto the processor heatsink, and the box has a 120mm fan at the back. With minimal load the CPU is at 60C. The fan settings are adjusted in the BIOS to keep a low airflow from both fans.

More descripton I've put on Hackaday and a short youtube.
