Install problems

  • Hi, I have been trying to get OMC working for a while, first on a Raspberry Pi and then a Lenovo 90BX PC, seemed to install OK on the Lenovo but then it tried to reboot at the finish and doesn't get as far as the 'first time use' login screen described, it sticks on a screen showing 'checking media presence ... - media present ... - start pxe over ipv4/6' then rebooting constantly.

I am not at all familiar with Linux so not sure if I got all the settings correct in the install and certainly didn't understand some of the cryptic messages I get.

Unsure about drives as read it should not be installed on a storage drive, thought about the install on USB flash drive but I never get the option of it as target drive and I suppose the SD card option only works on stuff with an ARM processer .

So wondered if anyone might have an idea where I am going wrong, or if someone could point me to more detailed instructions.

    - start pxe over ipv4/6'

Do you have pxe boot enabled in the bios?

pxe boot is for booting from a network rather than a local drive

This will be helpful. On the same side you'll find also a guide for installation on a RPi

  • Thanks for the suggestions.

I can not find anything about pxe in the lenovo bios but it does have options for booting from network so I put them in the boot order but no difference though I have had a bit of success, it appears there is something wrong with the first HDD I tried so tried the install with an SSD and OMV is running now but I have hit another snag, it want's log in to start but it is not accepting the login and passwords I entered during install, are there anything like default log in's for OMV?

Was looking through the link to the manual and it does not seem that the Pi meets min hardware requirement, it is just an old Pi 2B, but the Lenovo meets them. Wondering about trying an install onto flash drive after reading that.

  • Tried several installs on TF, SD, CF and USB flash drives of sizes from 8 gig to 32 gig, all failed ! The tries using 8 gig always stopped near the start with something about 'could not find *.cfg file on install CD' , all others got to the reboot stage then all I got was the screen showing 'no boot media found' (I found the settings for PXE in the BIOS)

Why does an install of OMV make the install media unusable again, if I try using it again I get the screen showing 'no boot media found' , had to put the ISO on again several times.

I can't try the login as the working OMV on the SSD will not boot either now, I think I am going to abandon it and try something different.

I have no idea why it makes troubles in your case. Have you tried using the Debian Netinst ISO?

AI told me your PC might not support nvme boot. If it is indeed the case, try the following solution copied from my personal notes:

  • Since it's a booting problem and you've successfully completed installation, you can always use rEFInd to chainload the grub-efi bootloader installed on your system drive, even if nvme is not involved.
