RSync - What does the message mean?

  • Hi guys,

i ran this rsync-task in simulation mode, so nothing was done.

Can anyone please explain to me, what rsync will do, when i run this in real?

I cannot figure out, will it copy some files from source to dest, will it delete files on dest, where can i see in detail what will happen?

Thank you so much and sorry for the beginner question. :)

    cheers

Several things can be said from this output:

    1. The source and destination are accessible, and the job was able to run. It was synchronized from the video2 folder to the videos2_M4 folder.

    2. Unless you trimmed the output, nothing was deleted in the lines you show. When something is deleted, the beginning of the line says "delete" or "deleting" or something like that. If there is no line like that, it could mean that you didn't configure the deletion or that there was nothing to delete because nothing has changed in the source.

    3. A file was copied to the destination: 27824B8129D6A2D6-00-00.mrimg. The rest are simply folders whose permissions have been changed to be identical to those of the source.

  • Thank you, chente.

So if a file would be deleted in dest or copied from inside these folders on source, i could see it in the log?

    like the 27824B8129D6A2D6-00-00.mrimg, right?

So as long as only directory names are mentioned, nothing will be done to my destination, right?

    Thank you so much.

The background is: my source hd is failing slowly, so i canceled all rsync to my backup. I left the source in omv, to see how fast the failing goes. but of course i do not want to damage my backup.

    Yes

If a folder is mentioned, it means the permissions have been changed. This means they weren't the same on the source and destination, so rsync modifies them on the destination to make them equal.

All this assumes you haven't modified the default rsync job options in the OMV GUI.
