Here is my FranckeiNas

  • After a long long time without NAS (bad experience with Sino and HD seller 10 years ago), I decided to build an economic and evolutive base.

Futro S920 GX 222 GC with new thermal paste and new power cell, with it own power supply on an inverter.

    128 Go Msata SSD

    16 Go RAM

Spare power and Sata Cables, just in case...

LSI SAS9211-8i with a small 55mm fan to cool the dissipator (taken from a broken laptop).

    6 HGST 6To 3.5" SATA

Lab frame to hold the HDDs

Seasonic SS-300TFX to power the HDDs plugged on an inverter.

The goal is clearly lo cost, low consumption for light need, unless store capacity.

Things are becoming furiosly hard for me, as I am a beginner in linux, and i have met difficulties in flashing LSI card to move it as IT, and with flashing the OS to move PCIe 1.0 to 2.0 (not already done).

Even if I have not yet settled the RAID mode, due to low CPU needs. I am considering RAID10 with ZFS. But I read that ZFS was not a good choice in OMV environment. Proxmox shoud be better. But I do not feel ready to go in deeper linux knowledge.

Anyway, I met several troubles with OMV to start :

    - Docker repo not present in plugins menu

    - No possibility to install OMV Extra even if SSH and WeTTY are enabled. I have an access denied message even in POwerShell, Bitvise an WebUI. So I am a bit desperate.

I disabled "password" option to use publickey, but it is useless... Cannot succeed in that.

Stay tuned for the FrackeiNas pictures...

zfs doesn't have raid 10 and zfs works just fine in OMV. There are some things that might require you to use the command line. Proxmox isn't a NAS and does not serve the same purpose as OMV. You can use the proxmox kernel on OMV to make the zfs module stuff easier. I honestly wouldn't use raid if you want low power consumption since every read or write spins up all of the disks. Raid isn't backup and most home users don't need high availability that raid offers and should rely on backup instead.

Docker repo not present in plugins menu

omv-extras has the checkbox to enable the docker repo. Have you read the guide? https://wiki.omv-extras.org/doku.php?id=omv7:docker_in_omv

Not sure what this means. What error are you getting? Are you logging in as root? I recommend reading the guides that are geared toward new users.

  • Hi !

Thanks ryecoaaron, I gonna have a look to the mentionned documents.

Re my needs, they are very simple, to begin.

    Storing, giving access, safely to

    - my music library (6 To), for my server dedicated to music.

    - my video library (4To), for my video box (Jellyfin).

    - pictures & docs (1 To).

    All in local use.

I will consider later, if it is possible to dedicade private spaces for my daugthers, who need space, but not localy.

So, do I have to think about using HDDs normaly, and just planning backups ? Or to run as RAID, which RAID would you recommend with this poor CPU, which is in good shape (between 3 and current use)

Re, the oppportuny to install OMV Extras, I tried another solution with PuTTY. I was very enthousiast, but the window opened by PuTTY donot let me even write or paste anything. More than that, after a very short lap, "timout" and the wondow is shown as inactive....

    Still cannot download extras...

I would use them normally. I do and most others do. raid seems like overkill for your use case. I would pool disks with mergerfs and backup with something like borgbackup.

I don't really know what you are doing. What user are you logging in with? You could also enter the wget command into a Scheduled task in the omv web interface and run it (delete the task after).

While it's easier to set media permissions open, if your daughters want private shares (at least from each other) take a look at the -> permissions doc.

I tried another solution with PuTTY.

    Installing - using -> PuTTY.

Re, the oppportuny to install OMV Extras,

Installing -> OMV-Extras (Requires PuTTY to get on the command line.)

But I read that ZFS was not a good choice in OMV environment.

ZFS works as well in OMV, as it would in any other distro or NAS application.

If or when you're ready for ZFS -> ZFS.
If you decide to go with ZFS, read the document start to finish, before installing the plugin.

  • Hi ryecoaaron & crashtest,

ryecoaaron, I really do not known what I wanted to do unless installing extras... but before being here I had a look in another forum and I get lost in complicated things, as your solutiois the simple and easy one.

Even if I had trouble with downloading the OMV Extras and installing it, I finally succeeded in it.

crashtest , thanks for visiting this post. and thanks for the links. Is it possible tu switch to ZFS later without trouble and data lost ?

    Have a good day.

Is it possible tu switch to ZFS later without trouble and data lost ?

If you have full backup (which means a second full copy of your data)
    (Or)
    If you have extra room in your NAS, to create a ZFS array, and copy what you have to it;
    Yes

But, to get to what seems to be the question:
You can't "covert" from another file format to ZFS, using the same disks with data in place.

If you're contemplating how you might change to ZFS later, note some users buy a big external drive and use it for backup, similar to -> this.

For the reasons stated in the Backup Section of the Maintenance Guide, any experienced admin on this forum would tell you to backup your data. While you're in the build process right now, once you're up and running, don't wait too long to backup.

  • Salut ! J'essaie désespérément d'installer OMV 7 sur mon FranckeiNas...

  • You don't have DNS resolution on the system either by lost network connection OR by not having the DNS server configured on the GUI (if static IP was configured).

I reverted to DHCP, restarted the nas , problem still here.
