USB Backup plugin does not recognise device formatted as NTFS

  • I have a backup device that is formatted as ntfs. I was hoping to use this device as a backup destination of the USB Backup plugin. However the plugin does not recognise this drive as a backup destination.

I have many other backups on this device so wiping and reformatting it with a different file system is not an option for me. The permanent drives on my system are formatted as EXT4.

The drive is visible in the Storage section of the Openmediavault web GUI.

Other facilities on the server, e.g. Borgbackup, have no difficulty using the ntfs drive.

Is the USB Backup plugin incapable of using a ntfs drive as the backup destination? If not can anyone offer any suggestions as to why I cannot select it as the destination in the USB Backup plugin?

    Thanks in advance...

ntfs is not a native Linux filesystem and does not support all file attributes for proper backup. Therefore, it shouldn't be used.

Non-POSIX filesystems are not actively filtered, but they should be used with care because OMV is using file attributes that require a POSIX filesystem. One reason that your disk is not listed in the candidates dropdown is that the disk contains more than one partition.
