Fiber Coming!! Adding a faster NIC difficult

  • Running OMV 7 successfully on a Intel PC computer that has a built-in NIC limited at 1 Gigabyte of speed. Have 2 GB fiber coming. I was wondering how difficult the Debian/OMV operating system is to configure a faster NIC card in a PCIE slot. Will it find it automatically and I choose that it in the network settings? I can turn the on-board NIC off in the bios.

    Thanks for your advice

  • It could be a simple as plugging the card in and seeing if it is recognized. But before check the Debian 12 hardware compatibility list to see what NICs are supported before making a purchase.

Is all your other in the path gear capable of at least 2GB speed? If not there is no point to upgrading the NIC or the internet connection.

A backup strategy is worthless unless you have a verified to work by testing restore strategy.

    OMV AMD64 7.x on headless Chenbro NR12000 1U Intel Xeon CPU E3-1230 V2 @ 3.30GHz 32GB ECC RAM.

    OMV AMD64 8.x on headless Tyan Thunder SX GT86C-B5630 1U Server with Intel Xeon Silver 4110 CPU @ 2.10GHz & 32GB DDR4 ECC RAM.

  • Thanks G. I think it will be nice for some quicker downloads. Most of the equipment in the network is 1Gb and agree no benefit there. No harm in trying. TP-Link NIC card on $25 on Amazon.

    Thanks
