Question about Kernel Plugin

  • Hi,

i have recently upgraded my OMV from 7 to 8.

After Update to OMV 8 i have enabled Backports. Now the Kernel Plugin shows no default Kernel. Instead all Kernels are marked as removable, also the active one.

Not a reral problem, but i try to understand what is happening here :)

grub changed with debian 13. So, i had to rewrite a lot of the logic for the plugin. By default, grub does not set a default kernel. It just boots the first kernel. So, the plugin is showing you exactly what grub has configured. If it makes you feel better to have a default kernel, pick one and click set boot. But there is no problem here. The kernel plugin was the only thing really telling you can't remove a kernel. apt will gladly let you remove any kernel.

I am surprised how many people were worried about the lack of default kernel. The omv7 kernel plugin could actually be wrong about the default kernel in weird cases. The omv8 plugin always "asks" grub.

In SYSTEM --> Kernel select/highlight kernel you want to be a default and click on upper leftmost icon "Set Boot".

I am aware since I wrote the plugin and I mentioned that in post #2.

Well, you did not and you were not clear in your post #2. User did not know/was aware about this settings and that was the reason for my post. I understand that you wrote this plugin and you are the expert on the subject. From my experience, while being expert in/on something, making/writing instructions on the subject we sometime forget about that person that we provide help is not aware about basics of the subject like we are, so we "assume" things.

I literally said "to have a default kernel, pick one and click set boot." How is that not clear? The OP also said thanks for the clear explanation. The OP did know after I posted post #2.

I usually don't write docs because I am not good at writing noob docs. But I think I am capable of telling someone how to click one entry and click one button. That said, the docs written for the plugin do explain it well - https://wiki.omv-extras.org/do…=omv6:omv6_plugins:kernel (yes, these are omv6 but the same for omv8)

If you are trying to make things clearer, don't tag me in your response acting like you are telling me how the plugin works.
