Switching from QNAP to OMV - How do I migrate the HDD (with existing data)?

  • Hello,

    I'm new here and want to move away from QNAP, which I've been using. I've been using a QNAP NAS 895 Pro. Here I used a RAID 6 configuration (8 disks, including 2 spares). Unfortunately, one of its bays has failed (and one of my hard drives has died as a result). Now I'm facing the dilemma of whether to buy another QNAP or get some hardware and set up my own storage system with OMV (possibly in the QNAP's enclosure). I will go the second way ;) .

    My question is whether the hard drives I'm already using can be migrated to OMV in their current state and whether the data on them can still be used. Can I directly import and mount the drives and their data in OMV?

    If so, what do I need to do to make the folders and data on the drives accessible again in OMV?

    Keep in mind that QNAP creates multiple partitions on each hard drive. One for the operating system itself, and possibly others. You could probably mount the existing RAID in OMV and ignore the other partitions, but you'll always have something "unusual" on those hard drives that could eventually cause problems.

    Therefore, I would recommend creating a new RAID (if you really need a Raid), and transferring your data to that new file system from your backup.

    Welcome to the forum.

  • Hello Chente,

    Thank you for the warm welcome here in the forum :)

    thank you for information! I checked the current partitition structure on the currently degeraded running QNAP system. There I found:

    - md0 -> this seems to be the data storage from QNAP

    - md8 QMAP sprecial -> rootfs?

    - md9 QMAP sprecial -> rootfs?

    -md13 QMAP sprecial -> rootfs?

    Currently Im buying new Hardware for my self-build-NAS. When everything arrives I will put the 7 HDD´s from the QNAP to my new NAS. (now I am preparing the complete backup - better safe than sorry :) ).

    After mounting md0 at the new NAS, will it be possible to delete md 8,9,13? (and use the free storage at md0)?
