Notifications: Overload of Email Messages

  • Over the past year, starting with OMV7 and now OMV8, that I am being overloaded in notification messages to the point where over 500 are attempted and no longer sends but a few on a reboot since my upgrade to OMV8. Its been 8-months or so since email messages were only sent on a reboot. I currently have over 100,000 pages of messages in my logs. The email notifications I was receiving are old events going back to the last summer.

How do I remove the 100,000+ pages of messages from the logs?

How do I fix the notification system so the emails are sent as the event occurs, not from events months before and the messages are sent immediately not only at a reboot.

  • I ran sudo postsuper -d ALL

    It deleted 43 messages.

I decided to try sending a test message from Notifications. I immediately got he failed message warning to check the logs.

The logs indicated many messages repeating like: My Daily user sending limit exceeded.... For more information on Gmail 550-5.4.5 ....... delivery suspended, too many login attempts....

I then decided to run the sudo postsuper -d ALL command again, this stopped the creation of new messages.

I did received via Gmail about 60 emails with the messaging described above with the title Undelivered mail return to Sender title on them.

Any ideas? Maybe I need to wait until tomorrow before attempting a new test message to see if Gmail will accept new messages?

  • After a restart of my OMV PC I am continuing to see the following messages created:

These mail are coming from the monitoring system. The first one is mentioning that nginx, that is the webserver for showing the GUI of OMV, has not started. The monitoring system is then trying to start nginx.

The second mail is telling that his was successful and that nginx is now running.

So here is the question, why nginx is not starting or only after the monitoring system has started.

and these are also sent as emails (about 55 emails)

Does this mean, you get these same ~55 mails at every reboot?

  • Yes I just rebooted and got another 57 emails as above. Also as I mentioned above they are mainly old dated messages as either nginx i starting, or does not exist..., in this reboot the emails are spread out back to April 2025.

The last email time stamped and dated this morning is: RE: [OMV.local] Monitoring restart -- Does not exist nginx

After the last two reboots, after running the omv-salt deploy run nginx phpfpm command I no longer get other old emails.

  • After disabling the writecache plugin and then rebooting , another 60 plus emails as above arrived.

After running cmd sudo postfix flush then rebooted, no more emails! Success!

    However new issues:

Saw the new OMV update available to update from OMV 8.0.8 -1 to 8.0.9-1 . Attempted but Will not upgrade. Note this is my first attempt to update since I upgraded from OMV7 to OMV8.

Also tried in notifications to send a test email. Will not, get the 500 Internal Server Error window Failed to send email. This was working.

Thank you for your advice, hoping for more.
