ZFS broken after update

  • Hi

    Went to upgrade my test OMV v8.08 test installation today to v8.0.10. At the same time there were ZFS patches to apply which I did. The upgrade process failed when applying the ZFS patches, see attached log file of update process.

    Do I need to wait for ZFS patches to be released or is there some way to fix this ?

    Thanks for any help provided.

  • Hi

    I have (temporarily ?) fixed the issue by reverting to kernel 'Debian GNU/Linux, with Linux 6.14.11-5-pve' (was previously 'Debian GNU/Linux, with Linux 6.17.9-1-pve'). I don't know if this a complete fix, time will tell but I seem to have a working system again for the time being.

    I updated my proxmox today and got this. Might explain what happened.

    Maybe installing the micro code from proxmox repo might help?

    Good luck

    The zfs plugin updates were supposed to fix the problem you are having - you have zfs-dkms installed when you don't need it with the proxmox kernel and it is failing to build the zfs module for 6.17 proxmox kernel. What is the output of:

    dpkg -l | grep openme

    sudo omv-salt deploy run zfs

    omv 8.1.1-1 synchrony | 6.17 proxmox kernel

    plugins :: omvextrasorg 8.0.2 | kvm 8.0.7 | compose 8.1.5 | cterm 8.0 | borgbackup 8.1.7 | cputemp 8.0 | mergerfs 8.0 | scripts 8.0.1 | writecache 8.1.1

    omv-extras.org plugins source code and issue tracker - github - changelogs

  • Hi

    Sorry for the late reply I didn't get any notification that anybody had replied - should I have done ?

    I am not sure why zfs-dkms package is installed as this is a relatively new build. The build process was:

    1. Install OMV from 8.0.4 .iso file (as at 1 Jan 26)

    2. Install OVM Extras

    3. Install Kernel plugin

    4. Switch to Proxmox kernel (not sure which version this was but latterly was 'Debian GNU/Linux, with Linux 6.17.9-1-pve', now 'Debian GNU/Linux, with Linux 6.14.11-5-pve'

    5. Configure ZFS raidz-1 disk storage

    6. Configure NFS and SMB file shares

    7. Apply various OMV updates as they were released, up to 8.0.10 at start of this thread.

    The output from the commands you requested are:

    I hope this helps.

    Everything in your output is fine. What about:

    dpkg -l | grep -E "zfs|linux-image|proxmox-"

    omv 8.1.1-1 synchrony | 6.17 proxmox kernel

    plugins :: omvextrasorg 8.0.2 | kvm 8.0.7 | compose 8.1.5 | cterm 8.0 | borgbackup 8.1.7 | cputemp 8.0 | mergerfs 8.0 | scripts 8.0.1 | writecache 8.1.1

    I don"t know if this helps but this is what proxmox wants to do.

    FYI

    That makes sense. Looks like your system is doing the correct actions. Proxmox put the libzpool7linux package in the repo which conflicts with the libzpool6linux package. That is why the libzpool6linux dependency was removed from the zfs plugin.

    omv 8.1.1-1 synchrony | 6.17 proxmox kernel

    looks fine other than I would remove the debian kernels.

    omv 8.1.1-1 synchrony | 6.17 proxmox kernel

    plugins :: omvextrasorg 8.0.2 | kvm 8.0.7 | compose 8.1.5 | cterm 8.0 | borgbackup 8.1.7 | cputemp 8.0 | mergerfs 8.0 | scripts 8.0.1 | writecache 8.1.1

    You should be able to. I would run this just in case

    sudo apt-get install --reinstall proxmox-kernel-6.17

    then reboot to the 6.17 kernel

    omv 8.1.1-1 synchrony | 6.17 proxmox kernel

    plugins :: omvextrasorg 8.0.2 | kvm 8.0.7 | compose 8.1.5 | cterm 8.0 | borgbackup 8.1.7 | cputemp 8.0 | mergerfs 8.0 | scripts 8.0.1 | writecache 8.1.1

  • Thanks, things seem back to 'normal'. Interestingly, CPU and memory usage seem to have dropped considerably which has to be good. I do still seem to have a large iowait (15% to 35%) value at idle but that might be down to disk errors on the ZFS arrays and I will look to replace the disks in question in the near future. This being a test system after all.

    Thanks for your help.
