Do I still need OMV's Wireguard server with my new router?

  • Hi there.

Until very recently, I used the OMV Wireguard plugin (https://wiki.omv-extras.org/do…v7:omv7_plugins:wireguard) to access my home home network on my phone via the Wireguard app.

    This worked very well.

I have decided to buy my own router, rather than use the one my IP provider gave me, and am now using an TP-Link AX55.

I am about to re-set up everything for the new router but noted that the router has, itself, a Wireguard server built into it.

Which method should I use - i.e. Wireguard on my OMV server or on the router?

  • Wireguard on the router gives you access to the whole local network and reroutes your Internet connection via the router.

Rerouting via the local network is interesting as you will be able to use your own DNS and secure your remote connections (ex: when on vacation, if you are processing your bank information from a hotel on an untrusted WIFI).

Wireguard on OMV gives you access to OMV.

If wireguard has pre-shared keys, I see no problem in accessing the whole network.

This is your choice depending on your needs.

    2 x 1TB nvme for raid1+btrfs system

    10Gbit network (SFP+)

    11 x 10Tb SAS drives + 1 spare drive (running) in zraid3 + 3 additional spares (not running)

    2 x 800GB SSD drives (unused)

    1 x LSI SAS2308 PCI-Express Fusion-MPT SAS-2 controller card in mini-mono format

    256Go RAM

    1 x APC RT2000XL UPS with 1 x SNMP APC 9631 card
    3 x Rpi 5-CM with nvme systems

Wireguard on OMV gives you access to OMV.

I have access to my whole network using the plugin. There is no reason the plugin only gives you access to just omv.

Is there a reason why you use the plugin rather than your router itself?

I run ipfire as a router and it didn't support wireguard until recently. I also like being able to shutdown the wireguard OMV VM to completely kill wireguard if needed. It is also helpful when I actually use a plugin that I maintain.
