Upgrade to New Box/8.1

  • Hi, i am finally upgrading both my hardware and OMV from V4 to V8... the older box (Dell T7500) had an LSI 9211-8i card, raid 5, 4 drives, and has been flawless up till last week when it randomly shut down several times when idle.
I am installing the drives into my Lenovo TS440 server box. The motherboard can be set for non-raid config and my understanding is that will support OMV without the LSI9211 card.
Am i wrong about the Lenovo TS440 supporting OMV without a passthrough HBA card?
will the drives survive the new install when installed same sequence and scanned? I do have a backup!!
Any thoughts on the UPGRADE? :)

The upgrade is a fresh install!

  • You aren't being clear as to how the drives in the Dell T7500 machine were configured for RAID5. Was the LSI card performing the RAID, or was OMV performing it via software?

A backup strategy is worthless unless you have a verified to work by testing restore strategy.

    OMV AMD64 7.x on headless Chenbro NR12000 1U Intel Xeon CPU E3-1230 V2 @ 3.30GHz 32GB ECC RAM.

    OMV AMD64 8.x on headless Tyan SX GT86C-B5630 1U Server with Intel Xeon Silver 4110 CPU @ 2.10GHz & 32GB DDR4 ECC RAM.

  • The LSI card was passthrough and the raid 5 was software OMV4.
The new box has the motherboard configured for sata ACHI with no raid. From everything i researched that should support software OMV raid... I guess my concern is with the drives themselves - are they dependent on the HBA raid card from the old box?

  • Drives being operated on an LSI HBA card are not married to the card in any way. So, if you don't want to use the card, then don't use it.
