Want to use open source firewall/router computer software distribution in Virtualbox

  • Hi gang, I would like to try some open source firewall/router computer software distribution like PFSense, Sophos UTM, Untangle, IPFire, etc. with the Virtualbox on my OMV machine. I already have 2 gigabit NICs that I could use for it.

First of all, does anyone of you find any problems doing this, security, bandwidth wise or any other reason? Is it a good idea since I think my router is starting to go since it's disconnecting allot lately from the internet.

Second of all, which distribution would you go for or are you already using and is there a Virtualbox image created for the distribution already?

    Let me know your opinions.

    Thanks allot in advance.

I use pfSense myself. Love it and it is easy to install. Takes a bit to get used to when you are used to dd-wrt/tomato but not bad.

While I have seen lots of people using a VM for routing, I still think a separate box is better for security. Bandwidth and everything should be fine with a VM.

  • Hi ryecoaaron, thanks for your response.

I was hoping that security wouldn't be an issue, but for you to mention it right away, I'm hesitant now.

I could always get another box but try it first with my OMV box.

The only reason I say security is because the internet connection is connecting to the same box you are try to protect. I know it is connecting to the VM but it just doesn't give me that safe feeling :) I defintely would test in a VM though.
