RPi 5 OMV NAS - Not recognised by W11

    In recently install OMV8 on a Pi5 with Trixie. I followed the documentation step by step and accessing it from my Win11, iPad and iPhone worked from the first second.

    You already got the correct links to the official documentation for your setup. What I always do before doing anything, entering commands in the SSH client (in my case Windows Powershell) etc., I read the docs completely(!!!) from the first to the last character and make sure that I understood everything. In case I dont understand something or not being sure, I ask questions here in this excellent forum with a lot of nice people.

    And no, I'm not a IT/Linux/OMV-Pro, I started with the Pi5 2 month ago and have meanwhile successfully setup 2 Pis, one with Nextcloud and the other with OMV. So dont give up!

    Be thorough - follow it line by line. OMV on R-PI's. No additions (like preconfiguring something), no deletions, no skipping around.

    While the install process can not compensate for local conditions (internet connectivity, ISP issues, actual hardware problems, fat finger mistakes, etc.) it's been tested.

    Hey Crashtest. I followed the procedure like a bloodhound on the trail. Except for repeating the wget -0 - https://..... I did it once, and it seemsed to comple OK after the appropriate time.


    Please tell me that this line in the instructions is duplicated! Please have a look, and you will see what I mean.

    I did absolutely no preconfiguring whatsoever. I flashed the SD as per instructions, which I then followed to the letter.


    This is the second time I have purchased a brand new SD and a Brand new SSD, but now I don't know if what the script has done is preventing me from re-flashing the SD card and trying again for the fourth time.


    I am reminded of the old saying "Repeating a failed procedure over and over and expecting a different result is a sign of madness".

    OK - I'm the idiot! Fell for the oldest trick in the book, read what I wanted to read not what was actually there. It was not until I read thru a "non-official" instruction that made clear that the first wget line was a "preinstall" and second, that I thought was a duplicate, was in fact the "install".


    My only contributing factor was that for some reason the cut and paste function didn't work in the first instance.

    That's one of the reasons I encourage copying and pasting lines, to get what's actually there.

    Hi crashtest. I have been busy with other tasks so today I decided to have another go. I was unable to relocate the "official" installation instructions (if it is on this site I can not find it) so I worked with the unofficial instructions. Each time I tried, I would up with the procedure ending the same way, hanging as per the following.

    Have you any idea what might be going wrong? Crook RPi itself, maybe. I'm using a 5A Rpi power supply, so that should not be a problem. Its just totally frustrating that everyone says how easy it is, yet my multiple attempts have all failed.

    I wouldn't even try to guess where an internet install process is concerned. They (a shorgashbord of different install methods) are the reason why we wrote something that is sane and repeatable.

    Not good. You might take the time to test those cards before using them (that process is also in the installation doc).

    If they have any errors at all (other than 1mb will not be tested - this is standard), do not use them.

    Hi Crashtest. I was wondering if the SSD permanently linked to the Rpi which I am hoping to use as the storage medium should be formatted or not. And if so, what format?. And whether that may be causing me problems with the install.


    I assumed not formatted, as it doesn't say to in the official guide.


    Appreciate your thoughts.

    What type of interface does the SSD have? Is it a USB interface? If so, it can be imaged as a boot drive with the R-PI imager (at a Windows client) in the same manner as an SD-card or a USB thumbdrive. The imaging process will provide the format.

    (Even if you format the SSD, the imaging process would wipe the format and replace it with the boot image.)

    If you're talking about an SSD (with a USB interface) being used as a storage drive, yes you would format it and noted -> here.

    Thanks Crashtest. I figured that the SSD (with a USB interface) would probably need formatting as per your link. But the link presumes that OMV has been successfully installed before using OMV to achieve the formatting. So from that I further assume that the SSD should not be connected via USB interface until after OMV has been successfully installed.


    Would you agree?


    I'll give it a go anyway - the basic install has again stalled during the operation of the install script.

    Grrrr! There was no obvious sudo prompt, but it was waiting for a password! So that was why the multiple previous attempts failed.


    Got it to complete. Now to figure out how to drive the OMV Web Gui. Apparently I should change my login details. Still searching for that.

    Gday again Crashtest,


    I found and followed the omv7:new_users_guide, which was comprehensive and easy to follow. Then had a look at my W11 Explorer expecting to find NEWNAS or OpenmediaVault in the network items. Alas, no.


    I know that W11 is notoriously difficult to properly access other computers in the network, but over time I have developed methods for this to happen (SMB1 etc).


    I am confident that I have setup- the OMV share data and SMB properly, so I really don't know where to go from here.


    Any tips would be appreciated, from you or other W11 users.
