OMV Regen enhancement request - Now OMV Backup!!!

I have omv regen backing up to an external NTFS drive.

I use NTFS so I can easily read the backup drive from a windows machine.

I accidentally disconnected the power and like an idiot did not check to ensure the drive properly remounted.

When OMV regen ran, the backup destination wasn't mounted, so it started writing the backup to the underlying /srv directory on my boot drive and eventually filled it until the backup failed.

Perhaps omv regen can add a check to ensure the backup drive is mounted before running.

It's not within the scope of omv-regen to perform such a check. What happened was of your own doing, and it's safe to assume you won't let this happen again.

As an aside, for cross-compatibility between Linux and Windows, exFAT would be a better choice than NTFS.

I did another check on the cause of the disk full, it was OMV Backup not OMV Regen.

Indeed, unless you have added a volume to the omv-regen backup, it is unlikely that omv-regen backups will fill up a system disk. The backups take up very little space.

I have analyzed the options for checking whether the folder is on an unmounted filesystem, but there are too many variables involved (like symlinks, ZFS datasets, or custom paths). Adding a check would introduce risk for other setups. Since ensuring that a filesystem is mounted is the system administrator's responsibility, I am not going to add this change. Thank you for understanding!

chente I swapped the disk to ex-fat and am getting permission errors. Can you help?

It is not a good idea to use non-native Linux file systems. Permission issues are inevitable. I suggest using EXT4 or any other native system you prefer.

That's on me - I suggested exFAT earlier but was unaware that omv-regen actually needs to modify file ownership and/or permissions on the backup destination.

HomeAdmin You might use ext4 for the USB backup drive, then - once omv-regen is done backing up - simply mount it as a read-only share in OMV so you can copy the backup over the LAN to your Windows client instead of reading the drive directly, thus avoiding the need for filesystem compatibility with Windows.

or just boot a bootable linux distro on the Windows box if you need to access the linux filesystem. Other than curiosity, there is almost no reason to access the omv-regen files from a windows box.

You can create the backup on the system drive and then copy it to your exFAT backup drive.
