So - new day new try

I started all over again and reinstalled OMV to have a fresh start

So this is what i did step by step until the point i am right now

1. http://www.linuxtv.org/wiki/index.php/DVBSky - closed source driver

apt-get upgrade

2. No Problem / no error

3. No Problem / no error

4. Download DVBSky Media build package - using media_build_bst_121102 (Download) for kernel 3.5.3/3.4.4/3.3.2/3.2.29

Until here everything works according to the tutorial.
but no this step should follow:

There is a driver for 3.2.29. I thought it might work. Not sure what else to have you try.

is there a way to manually update the kernel?

You can upgrade to 3.16 kernel but there isn't a driver for that kernel either. You may have to wait for OMV on Debian Jessie where it can use the 3.18 kernel that has the drive builtin.

The work hasn't even started as far as I know.

If you want to try an experimental kernel (don't blame me for any problems ), download and install with dpkg from here
