    It's not weird.
It's a learning, personal growth, experience.
If you can gain any level of experience using funds available on RPI hardware, go for it.

My personal opinion though... it's a waste of money.
My total on Raspberry Pi 3.

    Pi 3. $59.99
    Power Cable with Switch. $9.99
    Solid Micro SD. $34.99
Aluminum Case for Heat Dispersion. $14.99

    Total (US) $119.96

Today, literally just arrived home, I picked up a Lenovo ThinkServer with Quad Core Xeon 3.2GHz, 8GB 1600MHz DDR3, Gigabyte LAN and 500GB 7200RPM HDD - New old stock, still packed in the box.

    Total (US) $200.00

I would wait until I could save the extra $80.00 or even sell some crap around the house to get the $80.00 rather then pull my hair out every time a Micro SD Pops or Services don't function as expected.

    But that's me.

    USB 2.0 60MBps, Samsung Evo+ 32GB 20MBps. I'm not a mathematician, but... :whistling:

    My honest opinion?

Get a cheap laptop drive or SSD. You can get them on eBay or even Craigs List for $10-20. This is what I planned, before selling my Pi 3 on eBay. I needed transcoding abilities that the Pi could not handle and I read that the USB data speed is shared across all ports, i.e. the more devices, the slower the speed. If it works for you, great... but I would recommend the adapter and a drive for years of operation instead of weeks/months.

OMV Extras has a USB Backup Plugin - Highly Recommend.

Then remove the USB when complete. It's extremely simple to use and backs up all the system files.

When you make significant changes in an configurations... insert and backup again. Always remove when complete. seriously. I just replaced a USB to Serial interface on a clients machine that melted... not kidding. The other end was not even connected to any devices, simply plugged into USB port. Remove when complete.

Maybe this post could be helpful for you.

    No go. Tried three times.

apt-clean. and apt-update still fails and attempting to use LVM manager I get this on everything I click...

Failed to execute command 'export PATH=/bin:/sbin:/usr/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/local/sbin; export LANG=C; zfs list -H -o name, mountpoint -t filesystem' with exit code '1':

    On and on with Error...

Can someone point me to a fix? :whistling:

ReSeat. I know it sounds stupid... but if you really didn't change anything, this has happened to me.

Aslo... just FYI Raspberry Pi 3 has many version, believe it or not. Not only is there Green, Blue and Red boards, but revisions too.

This is my server setup. It's laughable from what was installed last year, but needed to face reality. I had a full sized aluminum server rack and several Dell PowerEdge servers running many Linux Server Flavors each and an instance of OSX Server on a VM system. 6 3GB SATA drives in three units. After constantly blowing breakers and my kitchen floor vibrating from all the power supplies and Xeon fans (Jet Engines really) I had to rethink my needs.

This room also servers as my darkroom for film and photo developing, so I would literally need to gorilla tape every LED on every unit. All the storage I had and approximately 1% was used. I don't really trust anything with moving parts, so all my data gets stored until an eventual write to BDR.

My biggest need is storage space while traveling. I take a lot of photos and travel quite extensively to locations where I always... at some point, will have Internet and batch upload to my house in the U.S. In Asia the Internet is so poor that I use TenCent (Free 1TB Storage) and then need to batch download when I get home.

Sounds more daunting then it really is. I have managed to piece together an Intel i3 2.9GHz with 16GB 1600MHz DDR3 and a PNY 120GB SSD installed on a PCI to SSD Controller to keep my 4 SATA III ports available. Bought a Rosewell Rack Can and installed 2 Western Digital Reds 8TB (On sale $179 at BestBuy $179 Each) and 2 Western Digital Reds 4TB (On Sale at eBay $139 Each). Providing 24TB of storage space in a nice quite unit, even with fans on each drive, that I figured out how to bolt to my ceiling to get back some floor space.

I have also installed and setup CUPs on OpenMediaVault, which I have never done prior, and it's awesome. My Samsung Color Laser has built in ethernet and for some reason it would just shutdown and not WOL. Using CUPs I have zero issues.

    Here's the Kudos...
I have experimented with FreeNAS, NAS4Free, UnRAID, RockStor and OpenMediaVault. By far, for my uses and experience level, OpenMediaVault has proven far superior to all the rest. I will openly admit that I have learned some serious things using the other fore mentioned distros, but for just wanting a system that works... Kudos goes to OpenMediaVault.

Building and installing every application one by one in a server distro is a daunting and needless task for most. If you're into it, go for it. I am not. I use to get paid for that s**t and hated every minute of it. I started with BSD and moved to Linux back in 96'. I went back to BSD for FreeNAS and NAS4Free... all it did was remind me what I hated about BSD. It takes 30 steps and 6 shell scripts to accomplish one task. BSD isn't "Rock Solid" because it's so beautifully coded... it's because no one has the time to hack it. Before anyone slams me for that, I do use Darwin regularly, sorry.

In any case, I have to say that I am impressed and extremely happy with OpenMediaVault and look forward to a long and wonderful journey with it.

The plugin hasn't been maintained in a long time. We have a shortage of help around here.

That's too bad. I have only been using OMV for a couple weeks, but it has changed my entire network layout.

I used Qnap and TerraMaster devices previously. I enjoyed the simple web interfaces of the devices and through my Linux servers in the closet to implement those devices instead.

After discovering OMV and receiving random shutdowns and attacks on the appliance devices, I have sold the devices on eBay and revamped a server installing OMV. So far it's a perfect solution.

NAS and/or Media Devices are great, but limited in versatility and performance. Not to mention patches and security updates are slow or non-existent. Using OMV I gain more freedom and reliability.

I thank you and those who do the diligence that you do. Much appreciated.

I appear to have an issue with CUPs web management on OMV.

It installs properly and when I click "+ Add" I see OMV "Please wait... Scanning for attached printers" then within the Drop Down menu I see my printer listed "Samsung C460 Series", I select it and click "Next"

...and that's all she wrote. Never quits or succeeds or finishes or anything.

My question is... Is this an lpadmin issue? Do I need to add the "admin" web interface account to lpadmin? If yes, can someone please provide some instructions?

    Thank You.

OK, no definitive answer here... but I have successfully installed everything... literally and Plex Server works.

I started with a fresh download of openmediavault_3.0.86-amd64.iso and openmediavault-omvextrasorg_latest_all3.deb
Created a Bootable USB of openmediavault 3.0.86 and installed on a 120GB PNY SSD. Used GParted Boot USB to resize the SSD to 16GB Boot and 90GB free space for later use by Plex Database and my WWW directory, NGINX.

I configured static IP, Domain Name Information and Time Zone.

Then I proceeded with every update available. Once completed I installed openmediavault-omvextrasorg_latest_all3.deb and proceeded with any updates reported, then installed all items one by one, applying after each install. I skipped openmediavault-plexmediaserver and did not activate the repository either.

Once all the installs and updates where done, minus the openmediavault-plexmediaserver, I mounted and configured all my shares and user accounts.

Once everything was complete and what I believed would be the worse case scenario had been implemented, I proceeded to activate the Plex Server repositories. I then checked for any updates... none. Then I installed openmediavault-plexmediaserver and everything worked.

Previously I would install updates, then openmediavault-omvextrasorg_latest_all3.deb and then install all the plugins I desire with plans to create the Shares and accounts after the fact... this is when I was receiving error after error, even though I had done the exact procedure as many as 6 times previously without issue.

So, what do I get from this? I think it was a plex user or process permissions issue. Leaving the creation of the plex user and the installation of the plex server process to last seems to be the easy way to fix it.
