Got the following notification the other day. Not sure what caused it and sorry, do not remember if samba/cifs services were affected as I restarted OMV upon receipt. Not that I would know what to do with dgb debugging, but thought that this package ought be considered for inclusion in OMV packaging:
The Samba 'panic action' script, /usr/share/samba/panic-action,was called for PID 226575 (/usr/sbin/smbd).
This means there was a problem with the program, such as a segfault. However, gdb was not found on your system, so the error could not bedebugged. Please install the gdb package so that debugging informationis available the next time such a problem occurs.
sudo omv-update appears to work okay. I am posting this more as FYI in case this might be part of an underlying issue. Also, looking in /tmp/ right after the update - none of indicated files exist.

On the KVM that has the daily error, the directory exists: -rw------- 1 admin root 0 Sep 14 00:01 admin containing an empty file named admin.
On the two KVMs that do NOT produce an error, /var/run/faillock is missing. I created this directory using mkdir -p to see what happens (did not add an empty file). drwxr-xr-x 29 root root 1.1K Sep 14 00:15 ...
Version 5.6.3-1 (Usul)

For the past week, I have been getting a daily notification for updates that have already been completed more than a week back:
"Go to the 'System | Update Management' page in the web interface or run 'omv-update' from the CLI to install them finally.
The following NEW packages will be installed:
linux-image-5.10.0-0.bpo.4-amd64
The following packages will be upgraded:
linux-image-amd64 openmediavault
2 upgraded, 1 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
Need to get 0 B/55.0 MB of archives.
After this operation, 297 MB of additional disk space will be used.
Download complete and in download only mode"
Here is what I have done:
1) System | Update Management | Check. RESULT=Blank.
2) From a CLI - sudo omv-update. RESULT= 0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded
3) sudo apt autoremove -y. RESULT=Nothing removed.
4) sudo apt autoclean -y. RESULT=Nothing cleaned.
5) sudo apt update --fix-missing. RESULT=Nothing missing.
6) From the OMV Control Panel, ran through all the update selections under OMV Extras, 'update' | 'omv-update' | 'upgrade' | 'dist-upgrade' | 'apt-clean'. RESULT=no chance in behavior. The next day, another email notification arrives with the same message.
7) sudo dpkg --configure -a. RESULT=nothing.
What am I missing? Can someone help, please?
On my data drive, at the root, did a "touch quota.user" and "touch quota.group". Reinstalled Debian 10-4 (buster). Ran the installScript from OpenMediaVault-Plugin-Developers (nod of thanks for that team for putting the script together - it installs Openmediavault + OMV-Extras). No more quota errors. Openmediavault Version 5.5.2-1(Usul) on an AMD A10-7860K Radeon R7, 12 Compute Cores 4C+8G with 16GB RAM. Linux 5.6.0-0.bpo.2-amd64. Just sharing how I got past this issue. Not saying that this an official or even a recommended approach.
My build is about a week old. Been getting the quotaon.service errors since installation.
