    1. Create a shared folder in the GUI of OMV
    2. Add the shared folder to the smb service
    3. Create a user in the GUI of OMV
    4. Give the user permissions on the shared folder
    5. Open the shared folder in WIndows File Explorer
    6. Copy the directories and files to the shared folder

I'm stumped and don't know how to proceed!

See below image which shows me logged in to OMV and the 2 Windows directories whch I'm trying to get the one on the left (my backup of the 2 directories - documents & shared media) over to the openmediavault directory (on remote PC connected via internet). I get the error message the OMV is either not available for remote access, or the remote computer is either not available or turned off - neither of which is the case.

I'm trying hard to get the files from the Windows backup onto the OMV system but no luck!

Thank you for your attempt to help. Unfortunately I've no idea about your suggested solution, it's way above my pay grade and much more complex than my level of understanding.

But thanks again for your effort.

I've downloaded the Acrobat Reader, it says as follows:

Update: "Browsing" for your OMV server under Windows Explorer, Network, now works in

OMV4. If your installation hasn't been updated recently, install the update wsdd 0.3-2 (or newer) and

upgrade OMV to 4-1-21 (or higher) as found under System, Update Management.

Is this an update to OMV? I believe I have the latest version of OMV but I don't know whether this instruction applies. As such, I'm still umable to open and sign in to the OMV site on Windows Explorer

    I'm confused . . .

I didn't create the OMV_Disks folder but did create the other folder. Which one should I use?

How do items 4, 5, & 6 in your task list fit in to this progression?

Sorry if I might sound dumb, I'm just uneducated in these matters and your help is important and valuable to my migration.

Thank you for your very prompt response, I'm onto to it already and hope this puts away my outstanding migration items.

First question: Under which item will I find the "shared folder in the GUI of OMV"?

The "GUI of MOV" can be easily misunderstood by a novice like me.

Sorry if I sound dumb because of this question, but I've spent the best past of 3 days trying to get this done and I don't want to screw it up at what's probably a vital stage.

Any further leads you can provide with the actual name of the menu items would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance for your vaulable assistance.

I'm trying to find my way through the puzzling maze that surrounds OMV setup.

All I want/need to do is get my old data (from a previous Windows installation) over to the OMV setup that I'm trying to get running.

The data is on Windows File Explorer, under several directories that I'll need to retain (e.g. music files that are multiple albums under artists, and various other directories/files).

I have all this data ready to bring across to OMV, but I'll be struck down by lightning before I can work out how to map the OMV directory /dev/sdb1 (I've been given the expectation by some on this site that the program that does the file transportation across my LAN will also create the subdirectories).

Please either tell me I'm dreaming, or otherwise, what I need to do accomplish this migration.

Once successful, I hope that I can leave the DOS migration in the past and, in future, add new files (if any) to the new OMV structure.

Constructive assistance would be greatly appreciated. :/

Create a shared folder as explained in that document and share it on the network following the procedure described there.

Access that folder from Windows and copy everything you want into it.

Thanks for your prompt reply, I'm still struggling along and hope that you can put me in the right lane.

"Create a shared folder as explained in the document" - I'm assuming you're referring to the "OMV 7 New User Guide", but I don't know where to look for the instructions on how to create a shared folder and share it on the network. Is it in "Basic OMV Configuration", or "Creating A Network Share", or somewhere else? I neither know what I'm looking for nor do I know how to achieve mt goals. Your help is definitely an advantage for me.

I'm also struggling where/how to find out how to get away from the OMV Workbench (do I need to?) in order to get down to the system level (maybe I don't even need to do that?) in order to access my storage at the User level to create the folders and other controls, rather than dealing with the Op Sys through an anonymous tool that doesn't seem to allow me to get to system level as I've learned to do in the Windows Server environment (that I want to replace with simple to use Linux tools for lower cost and, hopefully, higher simplicity).

My needs seem straight forward and, I hope, simple to accomplish: I want/need a platform that's simple to setup and will allow me to share certain files (i.e. docs and music) across my LAN (and hopefully outside the LAN to selected family members).

But so far what I'm seeing (from OMV and other platforms) is a complex and unecessarily difficult platform to achieve my goals.

I hope I'm wrong and hope this Forum can and will prove that I am.

It was a good start, thanks. I'll try to absorb as much as possible over the coming days/weeks.

One thing that's got me bamboozled big time is migrating my previous Windows files to the OMV platform. My old structures are setup with things like subject headings as the primary directory entry point, followed by info such as title in the case of literature topics, or artist in the case of music.

By nature, the high level Windows directory entries (such as artist) are numerous enough, but even more voluminous is the title of the song (or book). I'm trying to avoid having to manually create a directory entry for each artist followed by the title.

Do I have to create directories in the OMV admin app for all those artists (hundreds if not thousands of them), in order to get the OMV ready to transparently migrate from my DOS storage, or is there a quicker method that I haven't come across yet?

Also, where will I find instructions on how to get an access page that explains the system that will allow me to access and manage directories/files without having to use the one-at-a-time tools that seems to prevail in the OMV dashboard?

I'm getting the impression that OMV may be a sledge hammer to crack a walnut. I'm hoping that such an access facility may be there to prove me wrong but I just don't know how/where to find it.

Again, I emphasize my 'learner' credentials and reproduce the following passage from "https://docs.openmediavault.org/en/stable/installation/index.html.

To still get root access you need to create a non-privileged user and add them to the _ssh and sudo groups. After that you can SSH into the system with this non-privileged user and run sudo su

I have no idea how to achieve this "non-privileged user" status and my OMV installation apparently remains open via the standard user and password credentials utilised during installation.

This message is intended for whomever is available to help me get to the correct installation level so that I can proceed with loading my hard drives with secure access over my network.

Thanks for your prompt reply. I'm following the instructions on this Browser page (

    As a novice, I'm stuck.

I've just installed OMV, thanks for the ooportunity. I have struck an immediate obstacle and don't know how to get past this: after the installation is finished, the system asks for the standard user name & password. It accepts the login 'admin' (without quote marks) but it won't recognise the password 'openmediavault' (ditto re quotation marks).

Therefore I 'm stuck at the original sign on as the system doesn't accept the standard password.

I'm keen to get this going in place of my bad experience with Windows Server, so an early response and fix would be appreciated.
