ZFS is said to recquire much ram and also to be supported by an available cache ssd drive
normally this have to be tweeked by hand
does the ZFS plugin can take advantage by of any available ssd drive ?
if yes
may you recommend this drive to be an independant/additionnal drive ? or tha main OS drive ?
(my actual OS drive is a WD blue but i may switch to ssd drive if this give an advantage to the machine speed)
Hello
i was waiting for btrfs support in openmediavault but it does not seem under way
so i am switching my NAS from ext4 to ZFS which seems to be quite stable to what i hear
(actually i have EXT4 drive and in parallel a copy of dataset with ZFS)
up to now i am happy about the transfer
I have one question about the usage of snapshot
i have seen how to create a snapshot
but i would like to know if there is any easy way in the ZFS plugin to create the snapshot automatically on schedule (maybe in the beta version)
also to check errors it is necessary to launch some check/repaire command on a regular base ?
to backup from desktp client to my openmediavault nas
actually i am using urbackup, some others are using backuppc,
it is possible to make a manual installation of those softwares as shown there :
in parallel i am also using syncthing to sync data over 3 OMV nas.
at thh begining i was using everything with manual installation, then when syncthing debian package was released.
@ryecoaaron did make a OMV plugin for syncthing which is greate
as urbackup and backuppc have existing debian package
http://www.urbackup.org/debianserverinstall.html
https://packages.debian.org/search?keywords=backuppc
would it be difficult to create an OMV plugin for them ?
for backup :
i am very interested in btrfs and snapper. in fact i am waiting so much for btrfs in omv
but i do not want to twist so much my omv machines with btrfs only b myself.
in parallel to omv i am running a btrfs based rockstor instance and it is much less stable. so i am cautions with btrfs
would there be any plugin or tutoriel about how to use btrfs and snapper your way?
but high availability / replication :
rockstor is suppose to replicate well the machines but configuration is much less possibility than omv.
inside omv we have several tools to backup and replicate the main configuration to restore the installation after the crash ( usb-backup and backup plugins)
could we use that basis to maintain a complete live replica of the main machine and not only a usb key backup ?
you can also evaluate the interest of syncthing plugin with file versioning
fixed my issue maybe this to be added in the upgrade guide
actually to add easily a folder
syncthing gui allows for a shortcut ~ that normally links to Home/user/
on my actualy plugin install it links to : /var/lib/btsync.
maybe in a future of the plugin we could have the same interface as for btsync where a omv user can manage it own syncthing instance and have a direct interface to the folders he is allowed to access to
ok
thank you for the information
now we have a view.
maybe this would be good to inform this as a milestones
i expressed myself in a wrong way :
first : i am so happy that you are working on this plugin to make a great switch from btsync
and it is very good way to start right away with a simple workable plugin that will evolve with time
1
i did not used the community debian package of syncthing.
i did neither build syncthing from github source files
i did worked with the official syncthing linux builds taken which are published on github as ready to use executables : https://github.com/syncthing/syncthing/releases
because in fact syncthing does not seem to need dependecies to be workable
2
concerning additionnel features
i am in the mood for multi user
if the init script directly creates an instance for each user this is pretty cool already
update on my install
actually for replication between to omv machines : i made a switch from btsync to syncthing directly installed from syncthing and i will look carefully on the new syncthing plugin which seems promising
i use urbackup to manage centrally scheduled backups from several machines to my main omv instance
and i make rsnapshots inside a omv machine on a regular basis
your plugin seems to be working properlly for one syncthing user.
regular usage of syncthing is to make run a syncthing instance by each user, at different ports.
so that each user of the nas can sync the files on his equipment with the directories he is allowed to access on the nas
for this a config file for each user has to be modified to define the port of the gui and access conditions
and the cronjobs have to be created so that the syncthing executable is started on boot for each user
QuoteWe won't support it before we're on Jessie.
is this jessie update scheduled someday ?
2015 ? or 2016 ?
because the roadmap is a bit oudated : http://wiki.openmediavault.org/index.php?title=Roadmap
actually we are already far away from the roadmap with nearly realeased 2.x version
there is on this thread some explanations about how to actually use btrfs on openmediavault
thanks for this guide i will make a try on a test machine.
i know that the omv community was more focussed on zfs suport to allow move from freebsd nas users to omv.
it seems that now zfs plugins are released.
is there any interest from someone to develop this functions inside a btrfs plugin for omv ?
# btrfs subvolume create /media/<UUID>/@newsubvolume/.snapshots
# btrfs subvolume snapshot /media/<UUID>/@newsubvolume /media/<UUID>/@newsubvolume/.snapshots
# mv /media/<UUID>/@newsubvolume/.snapshots /media/<UUID>/@newsubvolume
so that everything is done through the web interface ?
would this be something complicated to do ?
from my side
actually i am using btsync 1.4 on omv and except it is not opensource it is realiable
i am using also syncthing and it is quite good too.
there is no need to make a package because there are builds for many distributions : ppa for debian and also docker : https://github.com/syncthing/s…i/Community-Contributions
yeah it seems HK 47 had a disappoiting test of syncthing
but we are several persons thinking that syncthing is pretty fine
i feel it works quite as nice as btsync
just is would enjoy an good integration inside omv
i am using syncthing but outside of omv actually
