I tried changing ACL for others from red/write/execute to read only but then I could not paste from windows into OMV. I changed again for others to read/write and that allowed me to paste from windows to OMV. I guess my question now is how does one add a windows user to my user group in OMV to allow the suggested change in Samba to work. I changed the samba folders from Guests only to guest allowed but then could not paste so I suppose the windows user has to be added to the user group in some way. Otherwise, using the ACL seems to be working for me.

Any advice on how to add the windows user to the OMV user group would be appreciated.

All that was under the shared folders tab. I just discovered that there is a different shared folders tab under storage where access control is found. All I had to do was change others to read/write/execute and now pasting works. After weeks and weeks of fiddling with this, I hope that is the end of the story. Thanks.

I have double checked all shared folders and they have read/write permission but I am still getting permission required to paste the file into the OMV folder. Is the message coming from OMV or Windows? Samba is set to guests only. Any help is appreciated.

I have installed minidlna. The problem I am having is when I try to copy and paste a media file from windows 11 into my omv folder, I received a message that I need permission. It seems to be a message from windows and not linux. I was able to get the windows media server up and running without difficulty. Any suggestions on how to get my media files into OMV?

    I am on OMV 7

I am a novice so can you give me a step by step instruction on how to do that? I tried to copy and paste but the paste option is grayed out. Do I need to use SMB or Secure Copy (SCP) to accomplish this task?

I have installed the minidlna utility and am able to access it both on my windows 11 device and my roku. I cannot figure out how to get the media files on my windows machine into the video folder of minidlna on my omv machine. Copy and paste doesn't work. I feel like I'm missing something obvious. thanks.

I replaced the ide drive for the omv program with a miniature sandisk 32 gb thumb drive about the size of a fingernail and the install and subsequent updates and installation of omv-extras went well. At least part of my problem was due to the ide drive not being able to handle the updates for some reason. Hopefully, one final question. I am getting ready to re-install OMV. Some preliminary question:

    1. When my attempted ill-fated updates led to crashing my system, I had selected all the updates and then confirmed. Would it be wise to attempt one update at a time to isolate any corrupted update or is that overly cautious?

    2. I am using a Geekom MiniAir with Win11 Pro and a twenty+ year old external IDE drive salvaged from an old Dell laptop on which I put the OMV program and a external SATA drive to keep the media. Is it possible that the IDE drive can't handle OMV. It seemed to be working fine when I had the system up and running previously.

    3. Once I get the system up and running again, should I clone the IDE drive OMV to a thumb drive for backup. I'm thinking that would make it easier to recover from catastrophe.

    Thanks for any help..

On reboot, it says I'm on 7.7.7.1 and still no ip address and none revealed by my router or Fing.

No, I can't log in locally

I'm willing to give it another try and re-install from scratch but I am not optimistic. If that fails, what is the best OMV alternative program?

This is my second failed upgrade. After confirming the installation of the upgrade, it proceeded but hung up during the process. I cannot get back in and when I reboot, it fails to give an IP address. The first time I ended up reinstalling all over again. It looks like I'll have to do the same again. Why does the installation of the upgrades fail?

Could it be that the 20+ year old ide drive that I harvested from an old laptop doesn"t play well with the wipe process? Everything seems to be working well now. Thanks.

Thank you so much. After a few more abortive installs due mainly to failure of the install procedure to wipe the disk and necessitating manual deletion of the appropriate volumes, I am back in business. Putty worked beautifully and I have installed extras and miniDLNA successfully. In future, if another install is necessary, how do you prevent the ip address from changing each time? Thanks again for your help.

Thanks. I think the problem I was having related to the fact that when installing omv from the iso, the process did not clear the disk. Maybe, old files from previous installs were left behind. I went into Windows, deleted the volume with disk management, and successfully installed omv. Now, I am trying to figure out how to get to root to install omv-extras from the command line.

I'm on 6th or 7th attempt to install. Initially, install worked and I was able to log into the workbench but after installing omv-extras, there was a crash. now, after re-installing, no ip address come up. I'm wondering if I should change the install drive( an old Ide drive ) or if the install procedure is not wiping that drive with each install. Should I try a 32 gb flash drive? I have tried both ethernet and wifi. Using a GEEKOM air 11 mini. Frustrated newbie needs help, please.
