I am in the process of setting up Open Media Vault.

    Question about sharing folders

I plan to set up following folders

    • Document
    • Music
    • Movies
    • Video Project

I want everyone on the network to be able to see and access Music and Movies folders

Video Projects and Documents should only be visible and accessible to me.

What is the correct set up process to get this to happen?

Is it a case of adding users to OMV and then defining what folders they can see when the input their username and password?

    Thank you for your help.

Edit - Additional Question below about folder structure.

I don't think that I necessarily need to make folders only accessible to me.

Should I have one main top level folder for example called 'Share' and then put all my sub folders listed above inside this? (I understand that if I do things this way, I can either have the whole 'Share' folder accessible either with or without a password)

Or should I make each of the folders listed above a top level folder on the network?

I am asking this as I will be streaming video and music across the network and want to get the most efficient streamline setup.

I wonder do some clients perhaps require things to be structured in a certain way?

    Thank you.

    Hello,

I am trying to set up Open Media Vault on RockPi64.

I have done the following things.

Downloaded Armbian and verified the MD5 code. It came back correct.

Formated the SD card with SD Formater.

Ran h2testw to write and verify the SD Card it came back with no errors.

Formated the SD card again with SD Formater.

Burned Armbian to the SD card using Etcher.

Logged in to Armbian, updated the root password, and created a new user and password.

    Rebooted armbian.

Ran sudo apt-get update, than ran sudo app-get upgrade.

Rebooted armbian, and logged in to the new user account.

    Opened the terminal and ran

    wget -O - https://github.com/OpenMediaVa…Script/raw/master/install | sudo bash

This gives me the following output, see below.

The system seems to hang and I am unable to access the local IP of the device from the browser.

I left the system running over night just to make sure it had a chance to download everything

To sum up the problem and question,

    When I run wget -O - https://github.com/OpenMediaVa…Script/raw/master/install | sudo bash

My system seems to hang and I can't get to the web interface using my systems local IP.

I am looking for what I can do to over come and fix this.

    Hello,

It's a while since I have last installed OMV.

I wanted to check I am not missing anything obvious.

I will be installing OMV on a Rock64 single board computer.

Is my understanding of the installation method correct?

    1. Download and install Armbian buster

    2. At the armbian buster terminal run - wget -O - https://github.com/OpenMediaVa…Script/raw/master/install | sudo bash

    ***

I know this seems like a daft questions but in the past I am sure there was an .ISO that you could download and there was no need to install Armbian buster first.

No, a directory with several files is created by Clonezilla. Different things are stored in different files e.g. Master boot record, Partition table, the payload itself and so on.
For a restore of that "image" you need the complete content of this folder. But don´t care about the files in this folder. If you want to restore a Clonezilla backup you are simply asked for the name of that folder.

I would recommend you to run through the restoration process also, not only the backup process to be familiar if it should be necessary sometime.

    Thanks for the reply @cabrio_leo

I read through you reply I wasn't clear if the files in the image are correct.

Please can you clarify if the files in the image look correct.

    -------------------------------------------

I agree with with what you are saying about going through the restore process, but I don't have a spare machine to do this one and don't want to risk the machine that is 'in production'.

Would it be possible to set up a virtual machine of ubuntu and then run clonezilla to make the resotre.

I could get the virtual machine (vm) working but wouldn't know how to get the vm to boot to clonezilla, if you could advise me on this that would be a great help.

Thank you for your support :)

    Hello,

I am hoping someone can help me understand what would be the reason or use case where some would want to install NextCloud on OpenMediaVault?

What would be the advantages or benefits of doing this?

Do NextCloud and OpenMediaVault not provide very similar functionality?

This is a genuine questions and I hope I get some sensible replies and learn something new.

    Thanks in advance.

This is the best way to go unless you can take the OS drive out of your OMV system and put it in a system booted to clonezilla.

I am able to attached a a screen, keyboard, mouse and external drive, that isn't an issue.

    One more thing

    • For the external drive that I back up the image to - Will it erase the whole drive? Or does CloneZilla, just place the image on the drive with out destroying what is already on there?

Thanks for your help with this.

I am looking forward to making the upgrade to the latest system.

    Background information

I am wanting to upgrade my open media vault install and think that I would be best to do a fresh install.

I am slightly worried that something could go wrong or won’t be compatible with my system. As a precaution, so that if anything does go wrong I can roll back to my current set up, I plan on cloning my boot drive with CloneZilla.

I have been learning how to use CloneZilla and have found this video very useful - (I am linking the video so others can also use it as a learning resource).

I now have a bootable USB drive that contains CloneZilla and understand that I want to create a disk image.

    My Question

    • Do I plug in the bootable usb drive in to my OpenMediaVault machine, attach a screen, keyboard, mouse and external drive and do the drive clone that way?

    • Or should I be connecting to my open media vault machine and making the image over the network to from a remote machine?

Thank you in advance for any replies.

I've never done an upgrade from OMV 2. Only read in the forum that it could be problematic so my best advice is to start over with a fresh OMV 4 installation. You can use your data disk(s) without problems but have to set up all the configuration stuff from scratch.

Me being a Mac user as well wouldn't use Samba without a ton of patches on top (see here for some technical details) but that's nothing you would get with a stock OMV installation.

But accessing same set of data with Samba and Netatalk in parallel can result in a real mess (due to metadata representation being incompatible) so my best advise is to continue with Samba on OMV 4.

    Hi @tkaiser,

I have started a new thread as I am looking at upgrading again and have a few more questions before I make the leep.

I was hoping you might drop by to my new thread to offer some advice.

    Thanks in advance :)

    Hello,

    Background information

I run Open Media Vault on a HP Microserver N54l

The system is currently running 2.2.14 Stoneburner.

At some point in the past I changed the BIOS for a custom bios that allows me to have additional features.

My system has a SSD drive dedicated to the OS, all the data is on a separate mechanical drive.

I would like to upgrade my system to a more up to date version of OMV.

I have PLEX and Logitech Media Server running on this machine, although I don't use either of them any longer. So I would be happy to remove them both.

    My Questions

    • Has anyone had issues when trying to upgrade with similar hardware?
    • Would you recommend I upgrade to the 3.x version of OMV or should I go straight to 4.X?
    • Is a 'fresh' install recommended or is there a way to 'upgrade'?
    • What do I need to do to make sure the upgrade is successful and I don't risk losing my data.
    • Do I need to worry about the custom bios becoming invalid and not working?

Why are you using such a horribly outdated version? Do you use Samba or Netatalk to access OMV? In any case using a more recent OMV version (which contains much much more revent Samba and Netatalk versions) will most probably result in the problem being gone.
AFAIK the old OMV versions even use Debian's own horribly outdated and unpatched Netatalk version so no way to fix any problem...

I haven't updated yet for a few reasons,

    • The main reason for not updating being is that I don't know Linux very well and I don't know how to update. Can you point me in the right direction for updating my system please?

    • Copying and pasting stuff over never used to be a problem. Why will this issue have cropped up now?

If I'm not wrong I've seen a pictured tutorial on how to use Clonezilla in the guides section of the forum.

Is there still a search function on this forum?

If I could find it I would search for the tutorial you mention @Stramm. Unless you can link me to the guide.

I am still hoping @ryecoaaron is going to pop back to this thread and give me some pointers about each of the different tabs.
